"Because of that," Aurora continued, "our father and brothers have no right to demand that she sacrifice anything for the family. Star should be free to do whatever she wants. Sometimes, I truly envy her that freedom of choice. I, on the other hand, was raised within the Williams family, enjoyed its resources, and therefore must follow its arrangements."
Aurora was clear-eyed and rational. She didn't complain about her fate or resent the constraints on her life. She understood that everything came at a price—a fair exchange. Nor did she gloat about her privileged birth or the advantages most people could only dream of. She possessed a quiet poise that was, in itself, admirable. It was a composure many men lacked.
"I've also heard rumors about the history between your mother and Star's," Joshua said. "What are your thoughts on that?"
Aurora smiled faintly. "The grievances of the previous generation have nothing to do with us. It's not our place as children to involve ourselves in our parents' rights and wrongs. I'm in no position to judge."
It was a flawless answer, a masterclass in diplomacy. Aurora's high IQ was matched only by her emotional intelligence. There was a reason she was known as the city's top socialite.
Just then, the waiter arrived with their food. After the dishes were arranged, Joshua suddenly asked, "Ms. Williams, would you mind if I took a picture?"
"A picture?" she asked, puzzled.
"It's not every day I get to eat at such a fancy restaurant," he explained. "I'd like to take a photo of the food and post it on my social media."
Aurora was taken aback for a moment, then found the situation slightly absurd. The Gardner family was the wealthiest in the world. If Joshua wanted to, he could eat here every day for the rest of his life. Clearly, he didn't know that she and Simone Lerman were already aware of his true identity as the head of the Gardner family.
*So, he's putting on an act?*
She shifted slightly to give him a better angle. "Of course, go right ahead," she said with a smile.
Joshua snapped two pictures before sitting back down. He didn't start eating right away, instead focusing on his phone as he composed his post. Aurora found the scene strangely amusing.
