The cottage was immaculate. The furnishings looked dated, but everything was spotless, without so much as a weed in the surrounding garden. It was clearly meticulously cared for.
Old Mrs. Cameron waved a dismissive hand at the family members trailing behind them. "You can all go back. I'll give Stella a tour."
They nodded and left, leaving only Old Mrs. Cameron, Stella, and Joshua at the cottage entrance.
Old Mrs. Cameron turned to Joshua with a kindly smile. "Young man, why don't you go have a look around the grounds? Stella and I would like to talk alone."
Joshua didn't move.
"Grandmother," Stella said, "Joshua isn't an outsider. There's no need for him to leave."
Old Mrs. Cameron's smile faltered for a second. "If you say so. Then please, come with me."
She led Stella into Nora's old room. The decor was from twenty or thirty years ago and looked quite old-fashioned now, but the room was dust-free, the floors gleaming.
"Even after Nora married, we always kept her room for her," Old Mrs. Cameron said wistfully. "We had someone clean it every day, thinking that whenever she felt homesick, she could come back and stay for a few days. We never imagined… that after marrying Skyler, she would never return."
