“What is going on here?”
Gabriel’s deep voice came from behind Isla, sharp and filled with concern.
He walked into the scene with steady, deliberate steps.
His tall figure seemed to fill the space instantty. Landon was beside him, his face serious for once, his usual playful mood nowhere to be seen.
The moment Isla heard her husband’s voice, everything inside her broke.
She turned and ran straight into Gabriel’s arms. Her strength failed her completely as she threw herself against his chest. The tears she had been holding back burst free, and a loud sob escaped her lips.
Gabriel caught her immediately.
His arms wrapped around her tightly, as if he was shielding her from the world itself. One hand pressed against her back, the other cradled her head protectively.
His jaw clenched hard, his eyes turning cold and dangerous as he looked past her trembling body.
“Stone,” Gabriel said slowly, his voice controlled but filled with restrained fury. “What happened? Why is my wife like this?”
Stone stood stiffly, like the trained soldier he was. His shoulders were squared, but guilt was clear in his eyes.
“I’m sorry, sir,” Stone said honestly. “I didn’t know she wouldn’t be able to take the information calmly. I shouldhave handled it better. It won’t happen again.”
Gabriel nodded once, acknowledging the apology, but his anger did not ease. He hated this more than anything-seeing Isla cry, seeing her fall apart like this. It hurt him in a way no wound ever could.
ISla clung to him desperately. Her body shook as sobs continued to tear through her chest. Gabriel rubbed her back slowly, whispering soft words only meant for her. He held her until her breathing began to slow.
After a while, Isla sniffled and slowly raised her head.
Her eyes were swollen and red, filled with pain and confusion. The sight shattered something deep inside Gabriel. His hands moved to her face gently, cupping her cheeks like she was something fragile and precious.
He leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head.
“I’m sorry, my love,” Isla whispered, her voice weak and broken.
“Shhhh,” Gabriel said gently. He pressed a finger to her lips and shook his head. “It’s okay. Don’t talk.”
He rested his forehead against hers. “I want you to breathe. Pull yourself together. Go back inside and celebrate with your sister. This is her moment.”
Isla hesitated, her eyes searching his face. Then she nodded slowly.
She pulled away, from him, wiping her tears carefully.
Landon stepped closer and lightly ruffled her hair, tryingcelebrate with your sister. This is her moment.”
Isla hesitated, her eyes searching his face. Then she nodded slowly.
She pulled away from him, wiping her tears carefully.
Landon stepped closer and lightly ruffled her hair, trying to ease the tension.
“Hey,” he said softly, attempting a small smile.
Gabriel shot him a sharp glare-a silent warning.
Landon immediately raised both hands in surrender, stepping back playfully. “Alright, alright.”
Isla managed a small smile and walked away, doing exactly as Gabriel had asked
The moment she was gone, Gabriel turned back to Stone.
“Tell me everything,” he said.
Stone straightened further and began to explain. He spoke of the kidnapping. Of how Gabriel’s brothers had been taken. Of the torture Uriel had endured. And finally, of his death. He narrated everything.
Gabriel and Landon both stiffened. And Gabriel slowly closed his eyes.
Now, he finally understood Isla’s pain.
He had never met his brothers before. He hadn’t evenknown they existed for most of his life. But the thought that he had blood brothers somewhere in the world had given him hope. He had imagined finding them, bringing them home, giving them the love and protection they deserved.
And now… one of them is gone forever.
“Where is Carl?” Gabriel finally asked, his voice low.
“He’s at Wyndham Hospital,” Stone replied. “I took him there immediately. He was beaten badly, but the doctors say he’ll recover.”
Gabriel nodded slowly.
“For now,” he said, “this stays between us. We cannot ruin this beautiful moment for the Rees family.”
Stone nodded.
“And Stone,” Gabriel called as the man turned to leave.
“Yes, Mr. Wyndham?”
“Thank you for your service,” Gabriel said sincerely. “I truly appreciate it.”
Stone said nothing. He only nodded once, then turned and walked away.
“‘m sorry about your loss,” Landon said quietly.
