Chapter 200
22e ouchers
Though she didn’t know where Lucille had gone, she did know the lady had left her husband for good.
Just like herself, who never wished to be found by her former man again, Lucille surely didn’t want to be found by Cedrick either.
So, besides saying no, she claimed to know nothing.
Cedrick finally hung up the phone with regret.
He dialed Lucille’s number again–still unreachable.
He opened the home surveillance app on his phone, only to see pitch black.
No lights in the living room?
Asleep in the bedroom?
Cedrick frowned, growing restless.
“Cedrick?”
Maricela clenched her fists, feigning concern. “Should we send Harlan and the others to check?”
“It’s fine.”
Having crossed the hotel lobby, Cedrick headed toward their room. “She probably turned it off to avoid me.”
Had she blocked him again?
If she blocked him this time, he’d spank her bottom first thing when he got back!
Cedrick scowled, seething inwardly.
Maricela forced an awkward smile. “Cedrick, how dare Lucille avoid you?”
Cedrick gave a bitter laugh. “She avoids me all the time.”
At least lately.
Maricela couldn’t quite keep smiling.
Cedrick didn’t seem in the mood for conversation either, so they walked to the room in silence.
They’d booked an oceanfront villa.
Cedrick went straight to fiddling with his phone after entering and sitting down.

“Cedrick-” Maricela called to him.
“Hmm?” he responded. “You rest first.”
“Still texting Lucille?”
Maricela asked in a coaxing tone.
“No, just replying to a few emails.”
Hearing it was work, Maricela went to shower.

After replying to emails, Cedrick returned to his chat with Lucille. He’d sent a long string of messages–all unan- swered.
That heartless little thing!
He checked the time. If Lucille really had turned off her phone, she probably wouldn’t turn it on again tonight. She must be asleep already.
She slept this soundly when he wasn’t around?
That familiar unease washed over him again–it had been ambushing him frequently these past few days.
“Cedrick-” Maricela’s soft, coquettish voice sounded behind him once more.
He turned to see her in a nearly transparent slip nightgown, arms raised to gather her wet hair.
“Cedrick, could you help blow–dry my hair?
I’m afraid I’ll catch a cold.”
Maricela’s voice grew even softer.
Water dripped from her hair in rivulets, soaking the slip dress. A large patch at her chest turned translucent where the damp fabric clung, perfectly outlining its curves and shape.
Cedrick stood, draping a robe over her from the wardrobe. “The AC’s chilly. If you’re worried about catching cold, wear something warmer.”
Maricela froze, then found herself guided by Cedrick to sit at the vanity.
Cedrick picked up the hairdryer and began drying her hair with practiced ease.
His movements were truly skillful–even using his fingers as a comb through her strands, so gentle and adept it never once tugged her hair.
Maricela’s voice trembled slightly. “Cedrick, do you… do you often dry Lucille’s hair at home?”
Cedrick’s hand paused mid–motion.
He had done it before.

Five years ago, when she’d just had the accident, everything was difficult–bathing, washing her hair, daily tasks.
Naturally, he’d cared for her for a while back then. He’d washed her feet, changed her bandages, washed and dried her
hair…
But gradually, those duties shifted to Grandma, then to Mylee…
He’d still helped Lucille occasionally since, but rarely.
Lost in thought, Cedrick finished drying Maricela’s hair.
He put the hairdryer back in its place. “All set. Get some rest.”
With that, he turned and walked to the living room, grabbed his suitcase, and headed upstairs to the second floor, pre- sumably to shower.
