Chapter 272
Maricela said, “I don’t want anything, really. If you want to forget, we can just pretend nothing ever happened. If… and I’m just saying if, like Harlan said, you want another place to go in this world, I’ll always be here. Whenever you think of me, just come over. I’ll make you a hot meal, talk with you, and listen to your troubles.”
The only thing left in Cedrick’s mind was Harlan’s sentence: It already happened, and you can’t turn back time…
He didn’t know how he walked out of Maricela’s house.
After he left, Harlan and Maricela exchanged a look, and both of them sighed in relief.
But Cedrick didn’t go to the office or the hospital. He just drove home in a daze.
His clothes reeked of alcohol. After taking them off, he threw them straight into the trash can, and then threw himself into the bathtub and closed his eyes…
He soaked in there for over an hour, only getting up when he was startled by his phone ringing while it was charging outside.
The call was from Harlan again, telling him to go to the office for a meeting.
He couldn’t muster the energy. “You guys have it without me.
“Cedrick, it’s a crucial meeting to discuss the partnership with Rossi’s company.”
Harlan said from the other end, “You have to be there.”
“Then postpone it.”
He hung up as soon as he said it.
He fell back onto the bed, his mind still buzzing.
His phone rang again.
It was Harlan again…
Cedrick didn’t want to answer at first, but after a moment’s thought, he picked up. “Harlan, the matter with Rossi’s company isn’t that urgent. Postpone the meeting to tomorrow.”
He took a deep breath. He finally knew what he had to do. He had to go to the hospital to see his grandmother.
At the hospital, Robert was texting Edwin back.
Edwin: After we dropped that woman off last night, the VP from Cedrick’s company picked her up. The two of them went to her place together. Cedrick went up later. The three of them were there all night. Cedrick didn’t come out until this morning. Harlan came out an hour after that.
Robert: Okay, keep an eye on them.
Edwin: Something interesting must have happened.
Robert seemed to understand something and let out a soft chuckle. “Well, this is getting interesting.”
Edwin: Are you sure you don’t want to tell Lucille about some things?
Robert: No need.
I want to see what else these people can stir up.
