Chapter 345 The Slap Heard Across the Office

Elaine mustered her courage and glared at Nolan. “What? You’ve got the guts to do it, but not to admit it? A man and a woman, alone in an office with the door shut in broad daylight–don’t tell me we’re supposed to believe you’re just talking business? Nolan, I’m your fiancée! The Hayes family recognizes only me! Do you even care what this does to my reputation?”

“I’ve already made it clear–I want the engagement canceled. You’re not my fiancée, so stop making a scene in front of the woman I care about!”

He had given her every chance, even sent her the termination agreement personally. But Elaine refused to sign. Every time, she’d tear the papers to shreds.

Eliza glanced at Nolan, then looked toward the curious crowd watching from just outside the office.

Letting this continue would do neither of them any good.

“Ms. Elaine, you’ve misunderstood,” Eliza said calmly. “I came here today to discuss a business matter with Mr. Hayes. That’s all. You’re reading too much into it. Our conversation is finished, and I’ll be going now.”

She turned to leave the office.

But Elaine’s voice rang out again.

“Who knows what you two were really doing in here? A noble young lady from the Sue family–what ‘business‘ could you possibly have with Nolan? You’re just pretending to be innocent. I wouldn’t be surprised if you two-”

Eliza’s hand connected hard with Elaine’s cheek.

“You… you slapped me?” Elaine stared in disbelief.

“Yes. And if you keep running your mouth, I’ll do it again.”

Eliza’s tone was icy. “You’re slandering me. I won’t let it slide. Ms. Elaine, I’ve heard you come from a respectable family. Try acting like it. Stop behaving like a gutter rat yelling in the streets. Yes, Nolan and I were once involved–but now I’m engaged to Henry, and there is nothing improper between Mr. Hayes and me. I’m not explaining this to justify myself–I’m telling you this: if I had any intention of being with Nolan, you’d be irrelevant.“.

Elaine’s eyes filled with tears. She looked to Nolan. “Nolan, are you really going to stand there while someone treats your fiancée like this? Did you forget your promise to our families–that you’d take care of

me?”

“I’ll say it one last time,” Nolan said coldly. “You are not my fiancée.”
