Chapter 372 A Child That Shouldn’t Be Born

It was the middle of the night. Why did Matteo want to see her now?

Eliza didn’t know what was going on, but she still got dressed and went downstairs, just like he told her to.

Matteo’s car was already parked outside. When she got in, he was the only one inside.

Looking around, Eliza said, “I snuck out behind Halbert’s back, so whatever this is, just spit it out.”

“Naomi’s pregnant.”

Those three words didn’t even make her blink.

That alone made Matteo narrow his eyes. Something felt off.

“You already knew?”

“Not really,” Eliza replied. “I only just found out when you said it.”

“But you’re not surprised.”

“Why should I be?” she said calmly. “There’s no way that baby is Nathaniel’s. You know that better than anyone.”

Matteo’s gaze turned dangerous. “If it’s not Nathaniel’s, then whose is it?”

“If it’s not his, then it’s someone else’s. Come on, Mr. Matteo, you really need me to explain how men and women work?”

She was spelling it out as plainly as possible, yet Matteo still looked like he couldn

ap his head around it.

Eliza sighed. “Naomi could be pregnant with anyone’s child. Nathaniel doesn’t believe it’s his–he just wants the world to believe it. He’s never trusted you, has he? But now he has a reason to raise his ‘own‘ heir. Why wouldn’t he take that chance?”

Nathaniel might be ruthless, but he wasn’t stupid.

Matteo was a late addition to the Hartwell family. Nathaniel brought him in to get rid of problems, not to inherit the family empire.

And Matteo knew it. That’s why he’d been secretly building up his own forces, waiting for the right moment to strike and take everything for himself.

But now Nathaniel had a problem. Matteo was the tiger he’d raised to kill others–and it was getting harder to keep that tiger caged.

Then Naomi showed up pregnant.

Did it matter whose kid it actually was? Not really. As far as outsiders were concerned, that baby belonged to Nathaniel.

“You better think fast,” Eliza warned. “Or you’ll be the one who ends up getting burned.”

Once that baby was born, Matteo’s only job would be cleaning house. After he took care of everyone else, Nathaniel would come for him next.

“You’re awfully well–informed.”

“Right back at you,” she shot back. “I’m just stating the obvious. What you do about it is your call.”

That baby couldn’t be allowed to live. And the Hartwell family couldn’t be allowed to stay peaceful.

Otherwise, Mattéo was doomed.

“There’s something else,” Matteo said. “I need your help.”

Eliza had a bad feeling she already knew where this was going.

“I don’t suppose I get to say no?”

“No,” he replied flatly. “I want you to put pressure on the Hartwell family.”

“Me? Pressure Nathaniel? How am I supposed to do that?” Eliza asked. “All I’ve got is the MISS brand. A legit cosmetics line. What do you expect me to do, throw eyeshadow palettes at their front gate?”

“Your brand doesn’t matter. But the people you know do,” Matteo said coldly. “Just Henry alone is enough to give Nathaniel a headache. And that’s not counting Colton, Lewis, Soren–that celebrity’s got skeletons, too –and Nolan’s not someone to mess with either. You’ve got plenty of contacts. Use them.”

Eliza suddenly regretted opening her mouth earlier. If she hadn’t laid it all out for him, Matteo probably wouldn’t be asking for this now.
