“We did have some misunderstandings before,” Elaine said sincerely. “I think Nolan likes you, and youtenu. be a good person. I’ve decided to call off the engagement. But even if I’ve made that decision, its not mist to me. There are a lot of business interests involved. I hope you

two can avoid being seen together until the engagement is officially over. Once that’s done, you can be together freely”

Her eyes were full of earnestness.

Eliza hadn’t expected Elaine to actually agree to the breakup. After all, Elaine used to treat Nolan like he was her lifeline.

If she had really been this easy to convince, Nolan wouldn’t have had to use so many tactics just to get her to let go.

As the two talked, a car engine revved in the distance.

Eliza turned and immediately recognized the vehicle–it was Nolan’s.

He got out and rushed over to her.

“Eliza, are you hurt?” he asked anxiously.

She shook her head. “I’m fine.”

Seeing that she really was unharmed, Nolan finally relaxed. “That’s all that matters.”

Elaine, standing nearby, said softly, “Since everything’s okay, I’ll head out now. You two can talk.”

Just as she turned to leave, Nolan called out coldly, “Stop.”

Elaine froze mid–step.

“Give me back my phone,” Nolan said icily.

Elaine turned around, hesitated for a moment, and then handed him the phone. “I didn’t do it on purpose. I already explained to Ms. Sue. I’ve agreed to end our engagement.”

She bit her lip and continued, “Nolan, I’ll call off the engagement, but I have one request. Please let me keep some dignity. I’m still a woman. Can we split peacefully? Don’t make it ugly in public.”

Nolan hadn’t expected her to agree so readily. His brows furrowed slightly, but then he nodded. “If you’re truly willing to end it, you can set the terms however you want.”

“Good,” Elaine replied. “Then I’ll go to Hayes Corp with you tomorrow and speak with the board. If no one objects, we’ll make the breakup official.”

She seemed genuine this time.

Nolan agreed.

Elaine walked over to his car and said, “Nolan, give me a ride home. I don’t want people gossiping about

me.”

Eliza had come with a driver/but Elaine had arrived in a police car.

“You can ride with Eliza,” Nolan replied indifferently,

Eliza glanced at him sideways. “Wow. She just wants a seat in your car, and you pass her off to she like burden?”

“My car’s only for you,” Nolan said flatly.

With that, Eliza couldn’t even stay annoyed.

She turned to Elaine. “Ms. Elaine, please ride with me. My driver will take you back to the hotel.

Though her heart ached, Elaine agreed. She remembered what Tyson had said–she had to play the long game. She couldn’t lose sight of the bigger picture.

Without protest, she got into Eliza’s car.

Meanwhile, Eliza said to Nolan, “Alright then, I guess you’re taking me home. How troublesome, Mr. Hayes

“It’s no trouble at all,” Nolan said. “Taking you home is my job.”

He opened the car door and gestured politely. “Ms. Sue, after you.”

Eliza sat in the passenger seat.

“She’s really going through with the breakup?” she asked. Elaine didn’t strike her as someone who would give up that easily.

“She’s agreed,” Nolan said calmly. “Leave the rest to me. The board will fall in line.”

“Alright. I’ll trust you.”

“Once this is settled, I was thinking…

“Don’t even think about it.”
