Chapter 396 Whose Orders?
Made sense.
Pesca Fearle
Halbert had just stormed the Hartwell house earlier today and given Nathaniel a serious scare.
There was no way Nathaniel would risk helping Naomi so soon.
“If it wasn’t Nathaniel,” Eliza said, “then there’s no one else who would dare do it.”
After all, they were the Sue family. Who would dare offend them by pulling strings to get Naomi out?
“Let’s go check anyway,” Matteo said.
He’d only come because one of his men had sent in an urgent report. Good thing Eliza wasn’t in a deep sleep–otherwise they wouldn’t have been able to clear things up tonight.
Matteo’s car pulled up in front of the police station with Eliza in the passenger seat.
The police chief came out as soon as he got word they’d arrived. “Mr. Matteo, Ms. Sue, I wish you’d called ahead! I would’ve come out to greet you right away.”
“Cut the nonsense,” Matteo said. “Did you release Naomi?”
“I did,” the chief replied, “but wasn’t that on Ms. Sue’s orders?”
“My orders?”
Eliza looked stunned. She had been fast asleep in bed–how could it possibly be her decision?
“You’re saying it wasn’t?” the chief asked. “But the lady who came said she was part of the Sue family.”
“What lady?” Eliza narrowed her eyes. “You didn’t even verify anything before letting someone like Naomi walk out?”
“I did! I swear I did!” the chief said quickly. “She introduced herself. Said her name was Tracy–the eldest daughter of the Tames family. She’s lived with the Sue family since she was young, and I figured if Ms. Tracy wanted someone released, I’d better not say no.”
Plus, Tracy had come to Westbrook with Tristan’s blessing. Who was to say it wasn’t his order?
He had no choice but to play dumb and let Naomi go.
“Tracy?”
Eliza hadn’t expected that name.
Then she suddenly remembered–Zayden had shown up earlier that evening to plead for Naomi.
So that was it. He couldn’t sway her, so he turned to Tracy.
Even after all the terrible things Naomi had done, Zayden was still holding on to her.
If only he and Naomi had stayed together–why had they even gone their separate ways in the first place? Eliza’s tone sharpened. “Naomi’s release wasn’t authorized by anyone from the Sue family. You’d better

bring her back. If not, I’ll let Halbert handle it–and that’s not going to go well for you.
The chief paled immediately. “That… that wasn’t your order? Oh no!”
He scrambled. “I’m sorry, Ms. Sue, truly! I’ll have my men look into it right away and bring her back
He was just about to rush off when he hesitated and turned back.
“Well, I mean… Ms. Tracy is basically family, right? If you asked her directly. I’m sure she’d hand Naomi over without us getting involved. Wouldn’t that be easier?”
He offered a sheepish smile.
Eliza saw right through it.
He didn’t want to offend anyone. That was all..
She looked to Matteo and said calmly, “Then could Mr. Matteo be kind enough to drive me to wherever Tracy’s staying?”
“You’re asking me?” Matteo looked genuinely annoyed. “How would I know where she’s staying?”
“You’ve got plenty of men under your command,” Eliza said. “Finding one person shouldn’t be that hard. Don’t play dumb.”
Matteo looked away and muttered, “Fine. I’ll find her.”
“Much appreciated, Mr. Matteo.”
With Matteo on the case, Eliza could finally breathe a little easier.
Sure enough, it didn’t take long for Matteo’s team to locate Tracy’s hotel.
There weren’t that many five–star hotels in the city center, and someone like Tracy–a rich, pampered heiress would never settle for less.
By the time they checked the third hotel, they knew exactly where she was staying.
Presidential suite, Westbrook Grand Hotel.
Since Matteo wasn’t the right person to go knocking on her door, Eliza went up on her own.
As soon as she reached the suite entrance with her people, the door swung open.
Zayden stood there in a simple black robe.
