One of the students finally stepped forward and said nervously, “Halbert, we just heard some gossip and repeated it without thinking. Don’t take it to heart. We really didn’t mean anything by it–we just hope your sister can be a little more discreet.”
“Oh?”
Halbert’s eyes narrowed with a chill. “What gossip?”
“Well… um…”
They all exchanged nervous glances, no one daring to say it aloud.
But one student finally blurted out, cautiously, “We only heard it yesterday. They said your sister seduced Nolan and caused him to break off his engagement with Elaine. That’s why Elaine’s been sick and hasn’t shown up these past few days.”
“Yeah, they said Eliza’s interference made Elaine’s condition worse. She still hasn’t recovered.”
The more they spoke, the bolder they got–spouting every nasty rumor they’d heard about Eliza.
“Someone also said Eliza’s been close with that guy from the Hartwell family–Matteo, the substitute teacher from before.”
“And she supposedly stole Tracy’s boyfriend. Word is, the guy dumped Tracy and had a huge fight with her over Eliza.”
Eliza listened to the mess of rumors and suddenly started laughing.
She didn’t know where these stories came from–but they sure came with colorful detail.
“Eliza, we’ve got nothing against you personally. Don’t take it the wrong way.”
“Exactly. You’re the Sue family’s heiress. Who would dare cross you? Just don’t ruin the university’s reputation. With all the drama, I’m embarrassed to tell people I go here.”
“Alright, that’s enough-‘
“No, let me finish. She clearly got into this school through connections. The rest of us got here on merit–so why should she be an exception?”
The boy sneered as he said it.
Eliza looked at him and replied, “You’re accusing me of getting in through backdoor connections? You have proof?”
“Of course I do. With your background, how else could you have gotten into this school?”
“So you’re admitting there’s a threshold to get in?”
“I—”
He choked on the words, caught off guard.

Eliza continued, “Didn’t you all flaunt your family backgrounds when we started here? Let’s not pretend. Most of you are here because of who your parents are–not because of what you’ve accomplished. You’re all proud of your family’s status, but that’s not your achievement. Just lucky you were born into the right house. 1, on the other hand, met the university’s standards on my own merit. My background was part of the review, yes, but I also met every academic requirement. If I got in through the back door, then so did most of you.”
Everyone at this school knew background screening was standard.
Only those with exceptional family wealth or proven contributions to society could even qualify.
That’s what made getting into this university a badge of pride.
Eliza looked around and said, “If I remember right, most of you bragged about your families when you first arrived. But those accomplishments belong to your parents, not you. What exactly are you proud of? I was accepted because I built a company worth a billion on my own. So if we’re talking about backdoor entries- I’d say I’m far less guilty than the rest of you.”
“What a joke. You’re what, twenty? You created a billion–dollar company? Yeah, right. Anyone can make up lies.”
The boy clearly didn’t believe her.
Eliza shrugged. “I don’t have to prove anything to you. If you have the guts, investigate it yourself. If you don’t, then stop trying to guilt others. We all know–seeing is believing, hearing is not. You call yourselves elites, but you just blindly repeat rumors. Isn’t that pathetic?”
Halbert stood off to the side, quietly listening to her. For the first time, he thought his little sister would make a damn good debate team captain.
Truthfully, with the Sue family’s power, there was no need to argue at all.
If Eliza said she was fed up, Halbert could easily make those gossipers disappear from campus.
But Eliza didn’t back down. She faced them head–on.
And right at that moment, Matteo walked into the classroom.
As soon as they saw him, the gossipers fell completely silent.
Every one of them lowered their heads, afraid to catch his attention.
