Eliza really should’ve listened to Matteo more. In this world, there was no such thing as true friendship.

Only interest–and the constant push to get ahead.

Unfortunately, she’d figured that out a little too late.

“Sorry. I actually called you here today because I need to ask you something serious.”

“Go ahead.”

Henry asked, “Did your mother leave you a ring?”

“A ring?”

Eliza frowned. “I’ve never heard anything about a ring from my mom. And even if there was one, Naomi’s mother probably took it.”

She’d grown up in Naomi’s family.

All along, she’d thought she was Nathan and Evelyn’s real daughter.

She’d never known she was actually Emilia’s.

“I figured.”

Looking at Henry, Eliza frowned. “So why are you asking about this out of nowhere?”

“It’s nothing. My father’s just a little upset about the broken engagement.”

“Is it really your father who’s upset–or you?”

Eliza no longer fully trusted Henry.

She couldn’t tell which of his words were real and which were lies.

Henry had expected her to react like this. He said calmly, “Either way, it might be a bit of trouble for you.”

“What do you mean by that?”

Before Eliza could fully process what was happening, she suddenly felt something press against her lower back.

It was the cold muzzle of a gun.

When she realized what Henry was doing, her face changed instantly. “Henry, what are you doing?”

Eliza glanced at the bodyguard behind her. He was one of Henry’s regulars.

“Let’s go.

“Yes, sir.”

The bodyguard kept the gun trained on her waist the whole time.

Eliza didn’t flinch. “Do you realize what kind of consequences this will have? Halbert is downstairs. The second he realizes I’m missing, he’ll think of you. That’s only going to make things worse between our families.”

“You already broke off the engagement. How much worse can it get? My father wants you to learn what happens when someone calls off an engagement with the Foster family. But I don’t want to hurt you, so… it’d be best if you just cooperate.”

Henry’s expression stayed calm. He didn’t want to do anything to Eliza.

But he had to give his father an explanation.

On the way out, none of the other students noticed anything unusual.

The bodyguard kept the gun well–hidden, and Eliza didn’t dare raise her voice.

There was no benefit to pissing off Henry now.

Still, she wasn’t worried. If she disappeared, Halbert would realize it right away.

Downstairs-

Halbert glanced at his watch. It had already been fifteen minutes.

But Henry and Eliza still weren’t done talking.

“Should I go check?”

“No, I’ll do it.”

Halbert got up and headed upstairs, only to find the classroom empty.

“Where are they?”

He frowned and rushed to the window. Outside, he saw Eliza and Henry already walking toward the school

gates.

“Shit! Stop them–don’t let them get away!”

“Yes, sir!”

A few bodyguards bolted down the stairs.

But Henry had already taken off with her.

Halbert’s expression darkened instantly.
