Wendy’s lips curled as if she’d just heard the punchline of a joke. “What merit could possibly outweigh my crimes? Ms. Eliza, don’t make me laugh. I know you came here to capture me, but… I think we can work together, don’t you?”

Eliza listened as if Wendy were speaking nonsense. “Did I hear that right? You’re suggesting we make a deal?”

How could Wendy possibly think such a thing was even on the table? If not for her, the Claire University Medical School massacre would never have happened. And who knew what else she had done behind the shield of Saint Corp.

“Of course we can,” Wendy replied without hesitation. “I was betrayed by that man–nearly ruined in Westbrook. You and I could join forces. You help me take down Cramer and the one backing him, and I promise that once he’s gone, I’ll never harm anyone again.”

“You think just not harming anyone is enough after what you’ve done?”

“I’m the eldest daughter of the Foster family. You don’t honestly believe that locking me up means I’ll be punished by the law, do you? This is my biggest concession. If you refuse, and side with Cramer against me, don’t blame me for striking first.”

She gestured toward the front hall. “I’m sure you’ve already seen how many people I have under me–and just how deep my influence runs here abroad. That little brat thinks owning Saint Corp makes him untouchable? He’s wrong. The whole country is my network. If anything happens to me, they’ll come running–their profits are tied to me.”

Eliza knew she wasn’t bluffing. But that didn’t mean she was willing to let

She turned to him in surprise, not understanding why he’d suddenly accepted. They had never intended to meet any of Wendy’s demands. They had come here to take her in. And yet Nolan had given a simple, unhesitating answer.

Wendy looked almost pleased, as if she’d expected it. “Compared to my nephew, I prefer you. Only a man like you can be Westbrook’s ruler. My nephew is too soft to be head of the Foster family.”

Nolan’s expression didn’t change. “We’ll discuss terms later. Contact us online.”

“I’ll give you a code to use,” she said, tossing a small chip case into his hand. “All our conversations must be encrypted. I trust you understand, Mr. Hayes.”

Of course he did–any contact between them had to be secure, free from third–party ears.

“Eliza, let’s go.”

She didn’t move. She had no intention of working with Wendy. Nolan understood, but after a brief pause he said quietly, “Trust me. We’ll talk later.”

Eliza knew he must have his reasons, but she couldn’t accept it. In her eyes, no matter what misfortunes Wendy had faced, she was still the killer who had likely taken her mother’s life.

It wasn’t until they stepped out of the hotel that she pulled her hand free.

Her gaze stayed fixed on him, searching for an answer she could live with.

“She’s right about one thing–Cramer has someone backing him. That person is likely the same one who once helped Wendy. Now that they’ve split, it’s our best chance.”

Eliza knew that already. But that wasn’t what she was asking. She wanted to know why he’d agreed to Wendy at all.

Her eyes lowered. “I don’t want to work with someone like her.”

“Neither do I,” Nolan said. “But in that moment, I had no choice. She came prepared. I couldn’t be sure how many people she had here….. or whether she might hurt you.”
