Chapter 561 A Subtle Lesson
Vivian was Wendy’s foster daughter–Cramer had never let himself forget it.
“Have I been too cruel to her?”
The words slipped from him, startling his secretary.

“Since the moment she walked into this house, I haven’t said a single kind thing to her. Do you think I’ve carried too much malice toward her?”
Only today had he noticed–Vivian wasn’t quite like the other women.
Even if he told himself he shouldn’t think that way, guilt had stirred in him for the first time.
He rubbed his temples. “Go on. I have work to finish.”
“Yes, sir.”
The secretary withdrew.
Left alone, Cramer glanced at the chicken soup on his desk. He lifted the lid, poured himself a bowl, and tasted it. The rich flavor spread instantly, chasing away his fatigue.
So, for days, Vivian had been in the kitchen, making this soup for him, preparing breakfasts and dinners with quiet care.
If he hadn’t discovered it by accident, would she have gone on hiding it?
For the first time, he recognized that Vivian was not like Wendy.
Wendy was venom and guile, a woman who toyed with men’s hearts. Vivian, however, was nothing more than a naïve girl.
Perhaps he should never have taken out his anger on her.
She was just an ordinary young woman.
He said nothing more.
When a maid came to tidy up, Cramer told her, “Tell the kitchen to make some light dishes tonight.”
The maid froze, unsure if she had heard right.
Light dishes? But for days now, it had been Miss Vivian cooking every meal.

“Didn’t you hear me?”
“N–no, I’ll tell them right away.”

The maid scurried off but hesitated halfway. Shouldn’t Miss Vivian hear about this first?
When Vivian learned Cramer wanted light dishes, she immediately stood to cook for him herself.
But Eliza pressed a firm hand on hers. “You can’t.”
“Why not? He asked for light dishes–doesn’t that mean he wants me to make them?” Vivian’s face lit with hope. For her, it was a breakthrough.
Eliza shook her head. “He asked the kitchen, not you.”
Everyone could see the truth–Cramer had left the words deliberately vague. Pride held him back from asking her directly.
Eliza told the maid, “Do as Mr. Cullinan said. Have the kitchen prepare the light dishes.”
“Yes, Ms. Rivers.”
Vivian stared in confusion. “Why, Ms. Rivers? Why can’t I go?”
“Because if you rush to the kitchen now, he’ll only see you as a cook–or worse, as someone he can summon and dismiss at will. You need to make him come to you. If he wants your food, he’ll have to ask for it himself.”
“You mean… wait for him to ask me?” Vivian was stunned.
Given how much Cramer disliked her, the fact that he had even allowed her cooking so far already felt like progress. How could he ever lower himself to request it from her directly?
“But… what if he gets angry?”
Eliza gave her shoulder a reassuring pat. “He won’t. On the contrary, it will make him pay more attention to you. Trust me–if you follow my advice, within three days, he’ll see you differently.”
Vivian exhaled slowly. If it might win Cramer’s heart, she was willing to try.
Sure enough, the kitchen soon sent up a tray of light dishes.
The maid who wheeled it in was nervous. The plates held all of Cramer’s usual mild favorites.
But the moment he tasted them, he knew.

This was the kitchen’s work–decent, but plain. Nothing like the meals Vivian had made.
“The kitchen made this?”
Caught off guard, the maid stammered, “Mr. Cullinan asked us to notify the kitchen, so they prepared according to your usual preferences.”
