Evelyn had been nothing more than a housewife. Once she lost her usefulness, who would bother killing her? Unless–unless her very existence threatened someone.

Her mind leapt to the woman burning like wildfire abroad–Sofia.

If Naomi feared her mother might expose her secret, if Evelyn was a ticking time bomb she couldn’t control, then killing her made sense. Naomi could rid herself of the risk, and with Wendy’s help, ascend to a higher identity. Everything fell neatly into place.

But even knowing it, Eliza could hardly imagine Naomi crossing such a line.

All those years Nathan and Evelyn had spoiled her, poured all their love into her–what good had it done? In the end, Naomi had still killed her own mother just to protect her future.

“I understand,” Eliza said quietly, gathering the file into her hands. “I’ll go through all of it. And I intend to visit the Hartwell family. I need to see Naomi for myself.”

“You suspect the one in the Hartwell household isn’t really Naomi?” Halbert arched a brow. He hadn’t followed Naomi closely, but if Eliza suspected something, she must have her reasons.

He didn’t press her. “Then go. If you feel that strongly, there’s something behind it. But the Hartwell family isn’t clean. When you go, make sure Nolan is with you. With him at your side, Nathaniel won’t dare touch you.”

“Alright.” Eliza nodded.

Halbert rose, preparing to leave.

By the time they went downstairs, Nolan had already made arrangements with his men. Halbert gave him a pat on the shoulder. “I’ll trouble you tonight then. Keep my sister safe. Don’t let the Hartwells push her around.”

“You have my word, uncle.”

The single word made Eliza flush scarlet. “My brother’s just talking nonsense. Why are you encouraging it?”

Nolan’s lips curved. “I’m not. He’ll be my uncle sooner or later.”

Her eyes darted away, heart racing at his casual claim. “Tonight I need to see Nathaniel’s house

my own eyes. You’ll have to make the preparations.”

He had known she would want this. While she’d been upstairs, Nolan had already set his men in motion. Nathaniel’s reach in Westbrook wasn’t what it once was, but he still moved in the underworld. Best to be cautious.

By nightfall, they were on their way.

Inside the Hartwell estate, Nathaniel lounged with two women draped across him, enjoying his evening without a care.

A sound outside drew Matteo’s attention first. “Father, someone’s here.”

Nathaniel barely looked up. He peeled the women off him and glanced toward the door. Sure enough, a Hayes family car pulled into view.

“Nolan? Or Tyson?”

He leaned forward, watching. When the doors opened, it was Nolan–and Eliza Rivers stepping down beside him.

Nathaniel exhaled slowly, the tension leaving his shoulders. He had expected worse. Just the Hayes heir and Sue family’s pampered daughter.

“Don’t let them in.” He waved a hand. “I’ve no interest in entertaining them.”

Matteo spoke quietly at his side. “Father, they didn’t come alone. They brought men. Refusing them might not be an option.”

Nathaniel’s brow furrowed. A moment later, one of his guards rushed in. “Boss, they forced their way inside!”

His face darkened. “What do they think they’re doing? I’ve never crossed the Hayes family. Why storm my home now? Whatever Naomi did back then is long past.”

He motioned for his men to bar the way, but before they could act, the front gates of the Hartwell estate swung open.

Eliza stepped across the threshold, her voice cool. “Boss, it seems you’re not all that eager to welcome us.”

Nathaniel’s jaw tightened. With no way around it, he smoothed his expression and forced a smile.

“Ms. Rivers, what are you saying? How could I not welcome you? You should have given me notice. I’d have made proper arrangements.”
