The Hide and Seek Game That Lasted a Lifetime novel Chapter 34

Chapter 6

Vivian’s head swirled with confusion as she shook it gently, trying to clear the fog clouding her mind.

“I can’t… see clearly. Am I even alive? What exactly happened to me?” she murmured, her voice barely steady.

The doctor, standing nearby and scribbling notes on her chart, responded calmly, “Miss Bennett, you were bitten by a snake, poisoned by its venom. Fortunately, it wasn’t a highly fatal dose. The venom has affected your optic nerve, which explains your blurry vision, but with consistent treatment, your eyesight should improve. Don’t worry—your husband has been beside himself with concern. He hasn’t slept a wink in days, staying right here by your side.”

Charles reached out tenderly, his hand brushing her cheek with a soothing touch.

“This is the least I could do,” he said softly. “I’ve already dealt with the snakes. I had sulfur powder spread all over the house—every corner. There won’t be a single snake in this villa again.”

Vivian’s voice was faint, almost a whisper, as she replied, “But we’re in the north, in a city. How could snakes even get in? The isolation room was sealed tight—no insect, no creature could have gotten inside.”

A deep despair colored her tone. “Those snakes… Diana must have thrown them in there.”

Charles shook his head firmly, his eyes steady and unwavering. “No. Diana would never do something like that. I know her better than anyone.”

Two silent tears slipped down Vivian’s cheeks, her voice trembling with a mixture of sorrow and disbelief.

“Charles, if you’d bothered to check what kind of snakes they were, you’d know—they were wild snakes caught from the mountain wilderness.”

“Enough!” Charles snapped, a flash of irritation crossing his brow.

“Even if Diana did it, she only acted out of love for her son! Evan still hasn’t woken up. His fever refuses to break, and the doctors can’t find the cause. Diana has cried so many times… I remember once you stitched a lucky charm for me after my car accident—it worked. Please, make one for Evan too. Pray that he’ll be okay.”

Vivian stared at him, stunned and heartbroken.

So all the care and effort Charles had shown her—it was really for Diana and her son?

She slowly closed her eyes, a tight, painful weight pressing down on her chest.

It took her a long moment to find her voice again.
