"How annoying!"
In the guest room, Tang Zijin lay face down on the bed, her face flushed with embarrassment, pounding the bedding in anger and frustration.
The young duke was becoming more and more audacious, daring to flirt with her in broad daylight!!!
She was livid!
Every time she thought of that scene in the rock garden, Tang Zijin buried her head in the quilt with embarrassment, but soon she emerged again.
Just now she had slapped the young duke, but she wasn’t sure if it was hard enough?
At first, Tang Zijin felt a bit apprehensive, then she shook her head. She wasn’t wrong, and if the young duke dared to flirt with her again, she’d hit him again!
The scene in the rock garden began to replay in her mind, causing Tang Zijin to roll around on the bed in frustration.
"Don’t think about it, you mustn’t think about it..."
With something on her mind, Tang Zijin skipped dinner and tossed and turned all night, unable to sleep.
The next day, Tang Zijin showed up in front of everyone with dark circles under her eyes.
Seeing this, Madam Tang asked worriedly, "What, didn’t sleep well last night?"
Tang Zijin forced a smile, "Mother, I’m fine."
Surrounded by people, Madam Tang didn’t say much, but she cast a discontented glance at Tang Zixin, who was squeezed among several young ladies.
Her daughter never liked to complain to her, but she had heard from elsewhere that yesterday Zixin had openly challenged her daughter, even more actively than outsiders!
When she first heard this news, she was so angry her stomach hurt.
She really couldn’t understand whether Zixin had any sense at all; slandering her own sister, what good did it do her?
After returning to the residence, she must discuss with the master and the old madam about this Tang Family’s eldest daughter.
Today was the Dragon Boat Festival. After breakfast, everyone boarded the boat to Ningmen Pass with the Crown Princess Consort and the Princess Consort Weiyuan.
Going to watch the dragon boat race, all the women were very happy. The madams sat in the cabin chatting, while most of the young ladies stood on the deck enjoying the scenery along the way.
On the boat, because of the river breeze and with Miss Xu chatting beside her, Tang Zijin managed not to feel sleepy. But upon reaching Ningmen Pass and climbing the pavilion to watch the race, she couldn’t help but cover her mouth with a fan to stifle her yawns.
Seeing she was very sleepy, Miss Xu proactively suggested they sit together in a corner.
Tang Zijin gratefully thanked her. No matter how she forced herself to sleep last night, she just couldn’t, and ended up staring wide-eyed until dawn.
Now everyone was excitedly watching the dragon boat race, but here she was yawning, which was indeed impolite and dampened the mood. It was better to avoid disturbing others.
After informing Madam Tang, Tang Zijin went to sit at the edge of the pavilion with Miss Xu.
Out of others’ view, Tang Zijin relaxed a lot. Though the race on the river was exciting, she couldn’t stop herself from nodding off.
Among the male guests, Gu Moyan sat accompanying the Crown Prince and Xiao Yeyang. He wasn’t in the mood to watch the race either, occasionally glancing towards the women. Seeing Tang Zijin dozing in the corner and accidentally bumping her head, he couldn’t help but shake his head.
Seeing that the race wouldn’t end soon, Gu Moyan thought for a moment, called Ping An over, and gave a few instructions in a low voice.
Soon after, the nanny serving the women cheerfully brought pillows to all the madams and young ladies, claiming it was to make everyone more comfortable.
The seats on the viewing platform were quite hard, so the pillows were welcomed by everyone.
The Crown Princess Consort and Daohua exchanged a surprised glance, each seeing astonishment in the other’s eyes.
The pillows weren’t their idea!
Daohua glanced towards the male guests and coincidentally caught Gu Moyan’s gaze looking in their direction. Following his line of sight, Daohua glanced at the corner where the women were, spotting Tang Zijin in her sleepy state.
The nannies took the opportunity to reposition the screens, discreetly blocking Tang Zijin and Miss Xu in the corner.
The Crown Princess Consort noticed as well and chuckled quietly, "I reckon you’ll soon have a second daughter-in-law."
Daohua chuckled in return but then jokingly scolded, "Silly boy."
Though she spoke as if disapproving, her actions were quite straightforward.
With the screen and a pillow for support, Tang Zijin was much more comfortable and slept through to the end of the dragon boat race.
With the race over, everyone was free to move around, and Miss Xu woke Tang Zijin.
"Thank you, Sister Xu!"
Tang Zijin awkwardly thanked her, her face still flushed from just waking up.
Miss Xu couldn’t resist pinching Tang Zijin’s rosy cheek, then laughed, "At last, I’ve got to pinch you; consider it your thank-you gift."
Tang Zijin was left a bit at a loss, between tears and laughter.
On the other side, Gu Moyan, following behind the Crown Prince and Xiao Yeyang to go downstairs, saw this scene and was immediately displeased. "Who’s permission did they have to pinch that chubby cheek?"
She sensed Miss Yao’s scrutinizing gaze, Tang Zixin was actively pursuing little Duke, and it was obvious that Miss Yao had the same motive.
She was being summoned by the matriarch for meals every day; that Miss Yao probably already saw her as a rival. Getting mixed up with her would definitely bring trouble.
It’s better to keep a distance.
Miss Xu, of course, did not want to leave Tang Zijin alone, so she politely declined Miss Yao.
Although Miss Yao was a bit disappointed, she didn’t insist and cheerfully said, "Then we won’t disturb you. If you want to go on the river later, there are plenty of boats available over there." Saying this, she pointed not far away.
Miss Xu thanked her with a smile and then watched as the painted boat sailed away with Tang Zijin.
Later, Tang Zijin noticed that Miss Xu’s gaze occasionally fell on the boats on the river, and she couldn’t help asking, "Sister Xu, do you want to go for a river outing?"
Miss Xu didn’t deny it, "It’s a rare outing, I just wanted to enjoy the river breeze."
Tang Zijin looked at the place where the boats were docked and said, "I also want to clear my head with the breeze. Why don’t we go for a river ride too?"
Miss Xu was delighted but then said, "Didn’t you just say you didn’t want to?"
Tang Zijin laughed, "There were so many ladies on Miss Yao’s boat, I just didn’t want to invite trouble."
Hearing her say this, Miss Xu no longer hesitated and walked towards the docking area with Tang Zijin.
Seeing the two approaching, a middle-aged boatman with a simple face quickly stepped forward with a smile and saluted, "Are you two young ladies looking to enjoy a river ride? My rowing skills are quite good, why not take my boat?"
The painted boats here today were all arranged by officials responsible for the dragon boat race, so Tang Zijin and company did not worry about safety issues. They nodded and boarded the painted boat.
The boat had barely left the shore when Tang Zijin, in the midst of chatting with Miss Xu about the scenery along the river, suddenly felt a cool sensation under her feet. When she looked down, she realized the boat was leaking.
"Boatman, quickly, bring the boat ashore!"
Tang Zijin was shocked and hurriedly instructed the boatman to dock quickly.
However, the boatman seemed to have been startled by Tang Zijin’s sudden exclamation and accidentally fell into the river.
Seeing this, Tang Zijin’s expression changed. She didn’t have time to comfort Miss Xu but rushed to the deck, grabbed a paddle, and handed it to the flailing boatman in the water, trying to pull him up.
But the boatman didn’t grab the paddle, and in the midst of struggling, he began to sink gradually until he was out of sight.
Tang Zijin watched the river’s surface for a moment, then decisively picked up the paddle and started rowing toward the shore. She turned and called to Zu Xin in the cabin, "Zu Xin, come out and help row the boat. Sister Xu, you and your maid stay inside and don’t move."
