I stood in the clearing, pacing.

She was late. Of course she was late.

I rubbed the back of my neck, my heart thudding too loud. I wasn’t ready. I shouldn’t have come. I shouldn’t have called her.

How the hell was I supposed to say it?

Hey, Caitlyn. Guess what? The moon decided to curse us both and make us mates. Surprise!

No. That would go badly. Horribly.

I stared into the trees, hoping—maybe stupidly—that she wouldn’t show up.

But then I felt her.

Her scent hit before she did. Heavenly. Delicious. Intoxicating.

And then she stepped into view, hands in her coat pockets, lips. already twisted into a scowl. “Well, well. The runaway shows his face.”

I didn’t answer.

She looked me over, approaching slowly. “What do you want, loser?”

I sighed. I expected this, in all honesty.

“What?” she continued. “Why am I here, Blake? You better have a damn good reason.”

My throat closed up.

“I just…” I paused. Then shook my head. “I wanted to talk.”

She laughed once. “Talk? What could you possibly have to say? You already said plenty when you abandoned everything.”

“I didn’t abandon–”

“You did,” she snapped. “You think I can’t see it? You were supposed to take the girl out of town by now. You were supposed to weaken Zane. But you spent the last week ignoring my calls and Lia is still stuck to his side. What was the point of letting you mark her? You couldn’t do shit.”

My fists curled at my sides. “You think I don’t know I failed?”

“I think you don’t realize how much you failed,” she said, stepping closer. “You weren’t just some pawn, Blake. You had a role. And now The Order’s wondering how to find another way. How to end Zane’s pack for good.”

I stared at her.

She was beautiful even as she insulted me.

The Goddess sure knew how to mess with your head.

Everything within me ached to tell her.

To lean in and silence her with a kiss. A kiss that would blow her

mind.

But I couldn’t do it.

Not today.

Not like this.

“We’re not mates anymore,” I said instead, voice flat. “Me and Lia. It’s done.”

Her eyebrows furrowed a little. “Really?”

“Yeah.”

She nodded slowly. “So all that pain was for nothing. That poor girl got forcibly marked and then the bond broke.”

It wasn’t nothing.

The bond breaking finally gave me someone who was just mine.

“If you’re done,” she said, taking a step back, “I’d suggest you go home and strengthen your pack. Because your town’s next. Zane’s pack will burn, and then it’s your turn, Blakey.”

I narrowed my eyes, stepping closer. “What do you mean? You said you wouldn’t attack my pack.”

She scoffed. “That was conditional. You failed to help us against Zane. Now the immunity you were granted is gone.”

“I lost my mate doing what you asked.”

“Oh please,” she said, tone dripping with sarcasm. “Don’t try to fool me. We didn’t ask you to mark her by force. That was all you, in your desperation to have her.”

She turned to leave, but I grabbed her wrist.

Caitlyn gasped, while I suppressed mine as sparks shot up my

arm.

She stared at me, her eyes wide. But she looked confused. She didn’t know what it was.

“Don’t go after Zane’s pack,” I said, my voice gentle. “Lia is dangerous, Caitlyn. You don’t know what she is.”

She pulled her hand free from mine, glaring at me. “We have a fair idea, Blake. Which is exactly why she needs to be stopped.”

“You don’t understand,” I muttered. “You’re going to get hurt. Let The Order do what they want. But you leave. Run away, Caitlyn, while you still can. You have a whole life ahead of you.”

Her eyes raged with something fierce. Something raw and unchecked.

“No,” she stated, “I don’t. All thanks to your kind.”

I stared at her, trying to decipher what she meant, trying to find the truth in her eyes.

But all I saw was pain, disguised as fury.

“You have to be careful,” I whispered in a last attempt to warn

her.

“No,” she chuckled. “Your ex does.”

I stared in the mirror, eyes focused on the scar on my chest.

My jaw clenched.

How did I let this happen?

I was a warrior. An undefeated one at that.

Blake was an alpha, sure, but how could I not see his intentions? How did I act like a complete idiot and let him take her?

The Goddess was on our side. We got lucky.

Otherwise, anything could have happened.

My Luna could have been tied to someone else forever.

My Alpha would have lost her mate.

And all on my watch.

I couldn’t meet Zane’s eye since it happened.

It was embarrassing.

The door clicked, and I quickly turned away from the mirror.

I turned to him. “Why? What happened?”

Ajax sighed, plopping down on my bed. “He said Christy saw Blake at school.”

My eyes went black. “I checked his house in the morning,” I growled. “He wasn’t there.”

“What?” Ajax frowned, sitting up. “Why?”

“To rip his head off, why else?”
