“Him again?” I snapped. “What does he want now? I made it. clear that I would kill him if I saw him again.”

“Well, in that case, I better go meet him alone,” Zane muttered.

I frowned, eyes narrowing. “Why don’t you look mad?”

Zane crossed over to me, his gaze gentle. “Because I’m more worried than angry. There is too much going on that we don’t understand, Lia. I thought—I thought we had more time. To prepare. To plan everything. To move you, your family and friends to more secure locations. But the Hounds woke me up last night, telling me that the Blood Moon was happening early.”

“How did they know?” I asked quietly.

“We have our sources. Warner even has a witch.”

My eyebrows shot up at that. “A witch?”

“It’s a long story, and it’s for another time. Anyway, she isn’t the one who informed us of the Blood Moon. It was Blake.”

My jaw clenched again. “So you were expecting him?”

“No. He just sent Ajax a text. The Hounds thought he was lying and wanted to find him and kill him. They’re very pissed after he shot Warner and Sheila.”

“Yeah, you should be too.”

“I am. But right now, all I care about is protecting you. He sent news, I confirmed it through our experts in astronomy. Turns out, he was right.”

“But what is he doing here now?” I asked.

“I don’t know. Let’s go find out?”

I sighed. “Okay.”

“Don’t kill him, though. Not yet.”

I rolled my eyes. “I won’t.”

Blake didn’t dare to meet my eye.

His posture was stiff, gaze downcast.

I stood with my arms crossed, watching him, daring him to try anything. To even breathe the wrong way.

His lips were pressed in a tight line.

He glanced at Zane, almost as if for help.

Zane matched my expression. “Well?”

I scoffed. “There, we have it. He thinks letting us know about the Blood Moon earns him a favour.”

“It’s not a favour,” he said softly. “It’s a plea.”

“Okay,” I nodded. “Go on. Plead.”

Zane’s lips curled into a half, amused smile.

“I beg you, Lia, when The Order attacks, do not kill her.”

My eyebrows furrowed a little.

“Her? Who’s her?”

He glanced from me to Zane, then in the softest of tones. whispered, “My second chance male.”

I almost choked on air.
