–LIA’S POV–

There was an odd sense of deja vu.

I stood outside my house, my heart beating in my mouth.

It had been two weeks since Zane took me to his pack house. Since I’d been missing from my home, despite being grounded. Two weeks since the blood moon, and the moment my power fully revealed itself.

But right now, there was only one thought in my head.

My parents were going to kill me.

And they were the only people in the world I couldn’t fight against.

I rang the bell, my teeth bothering my lower lip as I waited for the door to click.

Zane didn’t accompany me this time, so Christy did. But even she maintained a distance from the door, only offering moral support. She knew everything that had happened, and was slightly shaken up by it all. But she’d made it clear that she would never fear me. She would always be my best friend.

Her eyes were dim and downcast, skin dull and lips pale. Her nose was red like she’d just cried.

“Mom,” I said softly, my heart tightening in my chest.

She visibly froze, gaze flicking up to meet mine, her eyes rounding.

A choked sob left her lips, and without wasting a moment, she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around me.

“Dave!” she yelled so loud it made me flinch. “Dave!”

Dad came running, his hair disheveled, eyes wide. As soon as he saw me, he hurried up to us, pulling us both into a bear hug.

“Where were you, Lia?” he cried, holding us to his chest. “We thought we lost you. You have any idea the kind of things that went through our heads? We’d imagined the worse, Lia. How could you do this to us?”

A sob left my lips, guilt clutching at my heart.

“Yes,” Mom snapped too, slapping my back. She pulled away, tears rolling down her cheeks. “You little brat,” she scolded. “This is what you’ll do if we ground you? Would you do this to

“It’s okay,” she replied. “It doesn’t matter. As long as you’re okay.”

“I feel left out,” Christy muttered, stepping forward and joining in the hug.

Mom lightly spanked her on the back of the head. “At least you could’ve told us.”

“I didn’t know,” she cried.

I smiled, nuzzling my face into Mom’s hair, silently thanking the

Goddess above.

The room smelled like antiseptic and crushed herbs, but we were too used to Emerald’s infirmary to mind anymore.

Zane was lying on the cot, arms folded behind his head like he wasn’t bandaged up from neck to ankle.

His whole right leg was elevated, his chest still wrapped tight, and his face was a mess of purple bruises and healing cuts. The worst part, though?

His hair.

“You look like a peeled egg,” Ajax said, tossing a grape into his mouth.

Zane shot him a look. “You’re just jealous I can pull off any look.”

“You can’t pull off bald, man,” Aaron added, smirking as he leaned against the cabinet. “You look like a monk who got into a bar fight.”

Sheila snorted beside him, flipping through Zane’s chart with a bored look. “A bar fight he lost.”

“I didn’t lose,” Zane muttered. “I just didn’t win pretty.”

“You didn’t win pretty, and you didn’t die pretty,” I said, grabbing a marker from the counter. “So we figured we’d help.”

“Seriously?” he asked, staring down.

“Give him a mustache,” Aaron said. “A big one. Right on his thigh.”

“Why my thigh?” Zane groaned, trying to sit up.

“Relax,” Sheila said, gently pushing him back down with one hand. “You’re healing well, but you’re still missing about five ribs. And a quarter of your blood supply.”

“Do not draw a mustache on my thigh.

“Oh, now you care about your dignity?” Ajax grinned, adding something obscene beside my flower.

I snorted.

Zane let out a slow breath, eyes closing for a moment.

“She’s fine,” I muttered, carefully avoiding their

Zane narrowed his eye. “That’s all I get? ‘She’s fine‘?”

“I mean, she is,” I said quickly. “Fine. Like—like not dead. Breathing. Alive.”

“Goddess,” Aaron said, grinning. “You’re blushing.”

“I’m not.” I clenched my jaw.
