–LIA’S POV–

“You scared me, my Little Lia,” Zane whispered, his voice filled with so much vulnerability that my heart melted in my chest. He caressed my cheek with his thumb, staring at me like he was afraid I’d disappear. “Are you sure you’re alright?”

“Yes, Zane,” I promised, taking his hands in mine. “I’m alright.” I lowered my head and kissed his hand, hearing a soft beat immediately after.

I frowned, glancing up at him. “Did your… did your heart just skip a beat?”

Zane’s eyes widened slightly. “No,” he said, but I heard the same sound again.

“You’re lying,” I muttered.

“Alright, fine,” he rolled his eyes, trying to act nonchalant, “my heart did skip a beat when you kissed my hand. You can’t blame me. I thought I lost you.”

“Lia,” he warned, his eyes turning black with warning. “Stay in bed.”

I stared at him. “Or what, Zane? You’re gonna kill me right after you save my life? I’m not afraid of you anymore.”

His eyes turned back into their usual gentle blue. “Love, I am not keeping you here for any reason other than your safety. Please don’t make me coerce you. I may not hurt you, but I can lock you up. And I don’t want to do that. At this point, I don’t even think it would be safe for you to be locked up in a room

with me.”
