NARRATOR
Zarek asked her to come with him, even working hard to get rid of Rousse.
Meridiana was very sensitive to death and to beings who lived between both worlds.
"She wants to die, but… there’s too much guilt. She’s one step away from release, but something won’t let her accept it, and she’s heading down the wrong path."
She spoke with her head bowed, using her magic to feel Lisa’s emotions.
Zarek considered it for a moment, staring… just staring into the darkness shaped like a human face.
What had once been a beautiful woman was rotting into the bark of this tree she’d summoned herself.
He stretched out his hand with a sigh, determined to see if he could strike a bargain.
He didn’t want any more female corpses, especially not one so tormented.
Erasing the memories of a life spent suffering was a problem he didn’t want to deal with.
Better to persuade her to leave in peace.
"Everyone, shield yourselves with your magic. Meridiana, step back," he ordered soberly.
He took a step forward, dangerously close to getting pulled into the decay of the wood himself.
He closed his eyes and began to invoke his necromancy.
His macabre spells wove together and the ground began to shake.
Below, a black hole opened and chains of runes rose up and circled him.
When Zarek opened his eyes again, they weren’t just red. They were a mix of black and selenic gold crackling through his veins.
The powerful energy dropped, weaving a net along his neck and the outstretched arm he placed in front of Lisa.
Two fingers pressed to her forehead, and in that instant a horrible roar tore from the woman’s cracked lips as she jolted awake.
Her face looked crazed and fissured like shattered porcelain, while blood-chilling screams poured from her blackened mouth.
Her white eyes stared into nothing.
But Zarek’s runes wrapped her, silenced her, and in her mind the vampire prince was drawing out the memories of her soul and seeking a pact with her.
Meridiana had been right… Lisa didn’t want to live, and if she had become this monstrous thing, it was simply because she couldn’t atone for the sins of her life.
The horrible things she’d taken part in against her sister, even without knowing it, only pretending to save her.
In the language of the dead, Zarek poured proposals into her numbing mind. With every passing second, she was closer to becoming a specter that thought only of destroying everything in its path.
Then Lisa’s eyes changed from emptiness, and her beautiful green orbs returned to the light with a touch of her magic.
However, she wasn’t looking at the prince, but beyond his shoulder.
