NARRATOR
“Let me down, Vincent.” She insisted enough that the Beta set her gently on the ground.
The second her feet touched the grass, the pregnant Centuria closed the distance to the little witch.
“Lisa, I thought you’d died, by the Goddess, I…!”
“I’m not her,” the soft voice cut off Amber’s outpouring, confirming what Vincent had told her.
Amber’s expressions ran through several phases.
She had never hated Lisa, even though her last actions weren’t good ones.
The sorceress had helped them a lot when her relationship with Vincent was chaos.
Amber considered Lisa her friend; however, she’d distanced herself from them because of the poison her father poured into her head after Isabella’s accident.
“But those eyes… I feel that aura… are you Lisa’s daughter?” she even asked, chasing that crazy
possibility.
“I don’t think so,” Vincent said, stepping protectively to her side.
His attention was also caught by the small woman with emerald eyes.
Right now they looked red, and the shine of a few tears rolling down her cheeks was obvious.
She’d been crying at the grave.
“They’re her eyes… she gave them to me in exchange for tending Isabella’s grave and praying to the Goddess for her spirit,” she explained, because Meridiana felt she could trust them.
“She gave you… her eyes? Then… Lisa… she…” Amber’s voice started to crack.
She and Vincent had searched for her in secret after the fight over Aidan’s mate.
They were willing to help her escape and start a new life, as long as she didn’t harbor bad feelings or malice toward their family.
But Lisa vanished, and they presumed her dead.
“She was dying, turning into something evil, and her magic was going dark, but she freed her spirit and only asked this of me in return…”
As she told them, Meridiana turned to take in the field full of beautiful flowers.
Amber bent as well to lay down her bouquet of lovely lilies.
No matter the season, this hill was always blessed.
Exactly how she felt now.
She couldn’t believe how wonderful it was to see the world through her “own eyes.”
Because they belonged to her now, because she didn’t have to parasite any being to look upon the landscapes, her people… her beloved Rousse.
She was dying to see her general’s reaction when he found out.
A gentle touch on her hands snapped Meridiana out of the night sky.
She turned, amazed, to find Amber with tears in her eyes.
“It doesn’t matter who you are, but we thank you so much for freeing her from her suffering,” she told her from the bottom of her heart.
Her intuition told her Meridiana wasn’t lying.
“Lisa was a spirit of healing and nature. She was our friend. I only regret… not doing more for her.”
Amber lowered her head, stricken, but through her tear-blurred vision she saw Meridiana’s porcelain hand settle on her belly.
Vincent tensed behind her, alert to anyone doing something to his woman and his pup.
