Chapter 185: Voices
Voices. So many of them, haunting like a loud, dead, fucking bell.
The sickening screams. Flesh tearing. The flash of hands digging into chests and pulling out the hearts of the people he loved.
The look on their teary faces. A look that begged for answers, wondering why he had done something so devious.
It would’ve been easier if he hadn’t seen it happen. He could’ve just taken the news. But now, after six fucking years, it keeps replaying in his mind like a broken record.
Every night was restless. He looked older than his age, and the routine of being served through sex, hunts, and other sick pleasures was beginning to bore his mind.
Someone please end the goddamn screams in his head.
End it.
‘You’re a true leader, Toran. You’re unbeatable. Always remember that. And if anyone crosses you, if they ever make you feel small, make them pay. Burn the whole world down if you have to… Because no one fucking crosses a Venis and goes scot–free.‘
Those were the words of his father, Magus Venis. He should be proud of what Toran had become, right?
Toran, his son, had become king. And he did it by killing his own father, his innocent sister who mindlessly did whatever they asked, and his closest friend, Lord Pericles.
“Hahahaha!” Toran suddenly barked out a laugh at the dining table.
The servants stilled like statues, but they were ready to serve at a moment’s notice.
Brigid looked pale and angry, refusing to touch her food, while Yvonne simply smiled.
Yvonne didn’t care if the king acted crazy sometimes. As long as she bore his mating brand and his child, she felt
invincible.
Toran’s laughter stopped. His fingers raked through his hair as he stared at Brigid. “Why aren’t you eating, my love?”
Yvonne swallowed uncomfortably, while Brigid remained silent.
“Fairy. You’re still upset about last week? I said I’m sorry.”
Still, no response. He leaned toward her, reaching to take her hand, but she pulled it away.
“I was doing us a favor. Killing them,” he said, and Brigid shot him a hard look. “If I didn’t, they’d live a hellish life. Royalty would cast them out, and they’d grow up cursing us for bringing them into this world. Is that what you want? Watching them suffer while you’re powerless to help?”
She looked away, refusing to respond. Even if some part of her believed it, ending their children wasn’t the answer. But Toran only wanted an heir–nothing else. It didn’t matter what she thought or said.
“A boy will be cherished. Royalty will protect him from the hungry demons, and you, my love, will be adorned.”
Brigid couldn’t stop the tears, no matter how hard she tried to hold them back.
“Don’t worry, my King,” she said with a forced, painful smile. “Your mistress right here will give birth in three months. And I’m sure she’ll give you the heir you want. But if, by any chance, you ever impregnate me again, I

swear by the gods, I will kill myself.”
That said, she rose from the table and marched out in anger
Yvonne watched Toran sighed, tapping his fingers on the table with a frustrated look.
“I shall give you the heir you want, my King,” she said softly. “You don’t need to worry about the Queen anym-
“Shut it,” Toran cut her off. “Brigid is the only woman for me. As for the child I permitted you to carry, it serves a purpose one you’ll understand on the day you give birth. So know your place, woman, or I’ll teach it to you.”
–
Toran stood and left, leaving Yvonne seething. He was about to go after Brigid, but a message came that the council meeting with the Lords of Emissaries was about to begin, so he headed there instead.
A knock sounded on Brigid’s door, snapping her from her thoughts.
“Come in,” she permitted, and the door opened, revealing Yvonne stepping in with a hand purposefully resting on her swollen belly.
“My Queen,” she greeted with a bow and a smile that didn’t match her eyes and tone.
