237: His name
It had been a week since Arianna returned to Duncan’s side.
He slept often, the jagged black cracks on his body had started to fale, and each day he remained awake for a little longer than before.
Sometimes he stared at her like he was seeing her for the first time she would draw him close, feed him gently. Every day, Evelora’s servant came to help tend to the king, and Duncan’s recovery was faster than expected.
Once, when Duncan was asleep, the Seer visited. She warned Arianna to prepare to be ready when he craved. Arianna.
understood what that meant.
It would be like the first time they met. Once the Lycan within him fully healed, it would need to be fed.
Duncan stirred awake, his sight clearing as he looked around. He frowned upon finding the space next to him empty.
– Panic flared in his chest. He pushed himself up swiftly, his head banging from the sudden movement—but his worry dulled the
pain.
Before he could lose control, he caught her scent and heard her voice.
“I’m here.”
Duncan’s head snapped to his right. Arianna emerged from the darkness. He sat there frozen, watching her drop a tray of food. Her long silver hair, eyes, and crescent mark glowed under the warm torchlight.
Her skin, smooth and graceful, radiated beauty. Her form was still elegant and curvy. It was as though he was seeing her for the
first time.
She had been here, taking care of him, helping him heal… and still he could look at her all day.
His mate.
“My love,” she whispered, stepping in front of him and drawing his face to her chest. He didn’t wait to wrap his strong arms
around her.
He stayed silent, savoring the sweetness of her scent, her presence her touch, everything about her. She let him, humming a soft song and stroking his hair.
“How are you feeling now, Your Highness?”
He looked up from her chest, then pulled her onto his lap. Her breath hitched. Their warm breaths mingled.
“I feel so alive,” he replied.
Heat crept onto her cheeks, reminding him how easily she was swayed by his words and touch. He had missed that.
Her laughter when she played like a child around him. Her flushed face when he teased her. Her smile when she spoke passionately about books and politics. Her soft, seductive whispers when she needed to be wrecked… he had missed it all.
But… he had failed to be by her side for the past seven years. He had so many questions, but he was afraid to ask.
Afraid he’d hate himself for the answers.
“Blaming yourself again?” she asked, sitting up on his lap.
“Ari…”
She shut him up by pressing her soft lips against his, slow, tender, full of aching need. Duncan groaned, the sound ripped straight from his chest as his hands clutched her waist, pulling her flush against him.

Every nerve in his body sparked to life under her touch, like wildfi awakening.
The kiss deepened.
His fingers threaded through her silver hair, her heartbeat thundering against his chest like a drum synced with his own. She tasted sweet, like the life he had been waiting for so long.
She broke the kiss slowly, lips brushing his, then lingered there, her breath mingling with his.
Eyes locked.
And then she whispered, voice soft.
“You’re here now, and that’s all that matters.”
Her words sank into him, steadying the chaos in his chest. He smiled.
Now Arianna was feeding him. She had insisted, happiness etched in every line of her face. He quietly obeyed, allowing her to kiss his face over and over as he chewed…
“This place looks nice–except for your pets. They wanted to tear me apart the first time I stepped in here,” she said, glancing at the three sleeping hounds.
They were used to her now.
“They feed on fear,” Duncan replied. “And they get deadly when someone attacks, or when I command them to be. As for the place, Evelora made it look like this.”
“How did she get past the guards?”
“There’s a secret passage here. One that leads directly to her route. It made things easier,” Duncan explained, and Arianna nodded, processing it.
“Now, let me feed you as well,” he said after drinking some water
“I’ve already eaten.”
Duncan blinked. “What?”
“I knew you’d ask for something like this, and I didn’t want to stress you.”
He sighed. “You didn’t have to do that, wife.”
She blushed.
“Yes, I know how stubborn you can be when it comes to me.” She rose from his lap, but he pulled her back down.
“I selfishly don’t want your warmth to leave. Not yet,” he said. She blushed harder.
He reached up to caress her neck, the place where their mate mark had once been, now faded with the years. But that didn’t mean their bond wasn’t still strong.
“Or maybe I just want us to stay here… a little longer,” he added, voice quieter. “Just us.
Her expression shifted. She blinked.
“What about the realm?”
“Isn’t your army already doing the saving?” he said, grinning mischievously, giving her slender waist a gentle squeeze. Besides, the Seer said I need you to fully heal. Really… really need you.”
“Why do I feel like you’re afraid to hear my story?”
He froze, biting his lower lip. His silence was answer enough. She sighed.

“Dun…”
“Maybe I’m too afraid to hear it. I… I just don’t want to ruin this moment.”
Arianna’s eyes softened. “Then let me ruin it–gently.”
He chuckled dryly. “That doesn’t sound reassuring.”
“You still need to hear it. You’ve been avoiding the questions. It’s been a week, Dun.”
He pulled back slightly, studying her. “Fine. Go on, my love.”
He couldn’t deny it. He was just as curious. The questions had been eating at him.
“Fine, let me start this way,” she said, straightening, as if about to share the most exciting story of her life.
“I met someone. He’s dashing. And I fell in love with him at first sight.”
Wait. What?!
Someone?
