Anthony never saw it coming. Charlotte agreed so quickly, she didn’t even bother to ask what was going on.
“Lottie, do you even know what you just said yes to?”
“No idea. Why don’t you tell me?” Charlotte grinned, leaning in so close their noses almost touched. “Go on, explain it. What do you think I owe you? Just so you know, I don’t have a dime.”
“I’m expensive, you know. I want your whole life. Can you give me that?” Anthony’s eyes locked onto hers, his words coming out before he could even think about it.
Your whole life… The words hung in the air. Charlotte’s lips curled into a bright, teasing smile. He really dared to say it.
“I—” She was just about to answer when Hans’s voice called from the doorway.
“Anthony, the car’s ready.”
The moment broke. Anthony spun around, shooting Hans a look that could freeze lava. Hans stopped dead, confused and a little scared by the glare.
Anthony turned back, wanting her answer, but Charlotte was already on her feet and heading for the door. “We’ll be late for school.”
He could only watch as she walked out, his face falling, frustration written all over it.
In the car, Hans could practically feel the tension behind him. He gripped the steering wheel tighter, nerves getting the better of him. After a few seconds, he finally spoke up.
“Anthony, the auction’s set for seven tonight. All the items are real collector’s stuff, super high-end.”
“Okay.” Anthony barely looked up. His eyes kept drifting to Charlotte, who was curled up beside him, scrolling on her phone.
