Chang Jing’s injuries were not severe, just some scrapes. He and Marquis Xuanping had fallen into a snow pit in the forest, which led to the earlier misunderstanding.
"Where is Marquis Xuanping?" Princess Xinyang asked Chang Jing in the infirmary.
Chang Jing said sorrowfully, "I don’t know. I passed out after falling into the snow pit and woke up to find myself carried back here."
Princess Xinyang summoned the guard, Zhang Hu, and revealed her identity to him: "Take me to the scene."
"Yes!" Zhang Hu replied with a fist salute.
The group went to the forest where Marquis Xuanping and Chang Jing had their accident. Strictly speaking, this wasn’t Dongyi territory; the terrain here was too complex, and even the Dongyi, known for jungle warfare, dared not roam around.
Zhang Hu said, "Princess, it’s dangerous up ahead. Let me go instead."
Princess Xinyang replied calmly, "No need."
The group followed the footprints in the snowfield, searching all the way forward. When they reached a mountain hollow, Long Yi suddenly lay down, dug with his hands, and pulled out a token.
It was the token from the Marquis Residence.
Long Yi continued digging, creating a small hole.
He buried his head into the hole, looked around, and shouted: "Woooo—waaa—"
"Long Yi, have you found anything?" Princess Xinyang walked over and asked.
Long Yi pulled his head out of the hole and said to her, "There’s someone below, injured, breathing very weak."
As he spoke, he handed the token to Princess Xinyang.
Princess Xinyang recognized what it was, her eyes lit up, and she said, "It’s Xiao Ji’s personal item! Could it be Xiao Ji down there?"
"Can’t get down," Long Yi said.
Zhang Hu also came over, knelt at the hole opposite Long Yi, carefully inspecting it, his expression turned serious. He called to the soldiers with shovels coming over, "All of you, stay back!"
The group quickly halted.
Zhang Hu said nervously, "The rock above this hole isn’t stable, it could crack at any time. If the person below is indeed the Marquis, he might be crushed to death by falling rocks."
Princess Xinyang looked at the very narrow entrance: "Can the entrance be enlarged?"
Zhang Hu shook his head: "No, it will collapse if we dig. The only way is to see if there’s another exit below, so the Marquis can get out from there."
Princess Xinyang slowly and cautiously approached the entrance, tried to lean in, but her shoulders couldn’t fit, just a little too wide.
Zhang Hu saw her intention to go down herself and was greatly alarmed: "Princess! You mustn’t! It’s too dangerous! Besides, we can’t be sure it’s the Marquis down there! What if it’s not... you might..."
She straightened up and said calmly, "All of you, turn your backs."
The group was even more puzzled.
Princess Xinyang raised her hand and began to undo her clothes.
Zhang Hu hurriedly covered his eyes, turned around, and commanded, "Everyone turn around! Close your eyes!"
The royal princess, who wouldn’t easily remove her veil outside, undressed piece by piece behind hundreds of military officers.
She was left with only a thin inner garment, her delicate frame almost blown away by the fierce wind.
She shivered violently, teeth chattering, trembling incessantly.
Yet she did not hesitate. She looked at the dark hole, closed her eyes, and jumped down!
