Chapter 509 An Unwelcome Visitor

Through the ICU’s glass window, Lucas saw the woman on the bed. That always energetic old woman was now connected to various tubes, looking so frail and small.

His throat bobbed, his voice hoarse. “When will she wake up?”

“Tomorrow at the latest.” Benjamin pushed up his glasses, “But…” He glanced at Sloane. “She kept muttering your name and Sloane’s before she lost consciousness.”

Sloane’s heart was touched, and she held Lucas’s hand firmly. “We’ll stay here with Grandina.”

In the dead–quiet hospital room, the instruments made a regular “beep. Lucas sat by the bed, holding Tessa’s wrinkled hand. Sloane brought warm water, gently wiping the old woman’s dry lips.

“Did you know,” Lucas suddenly said, “when I was ten, I had a 40–degree fever. Grandma stayed by my just like this for three days and three nights.”

Sloane laid her hand on his shoulder, feeling the slight tremor in his body. Just then, Tessa’s fingers suddenly twitched.

“Grandma!” Lucas shot to his feet.

On the bed, Tessa slowly opened her eyes. Her cloudy gaze brightened the moment she saw Lucas. She moved her lips weakly. Lucas quickly bent down to listen.

“The ring…” Tessa’s voice was as thin as silk. “Did you… put it on Sloane?

Lucas, his eyes red, nodded and pulled Sloane to his side. When Tessa saw the blue diamond ring on their clasped hands, she closed her eyes in satisfaction, a single tear sliding from the corner.

“Good… good…” She raised her hand with difficulty, placing it over their joined hands. “Now… I can rest easy…”

Morning sunlight streamed through a crack in the curtains. Lucas was carefully tucking in the corners of the blanket for the old woman when a commotion suddenly came from outside.

“I’m sorry, visiting hours aren’t…” The nurse’s voice stopped abruptly.

The door was gently pushed open. Kelvin and an older woman stood in the doorway. He was much thinner, with heavy, dark circles under his eyes, bearing no resemblance to his former sunny, cheerful self.

Kelvin didn’t know Lucas was back. Seeing him there, he froze, and when he finally reacted, he was overcome with shame.
