Before Zephyrine can bow, my mother takes her hand and meets her gaze tenderly.

Her tone sharpens when she turns to my uncle Dareth.

“But I can’t say the same for you, Dareth. Of all people, you were supposed to be a role model for your children, for these children.”

“Queen, you won’t talk to me like that,” my uncle mutters, clearly displeased. “There’s no time limit for finding love. I’ve found mine now, and I’ll seize it.”

The hall falls silent. Aunt Eiryn stares at the man she’s borne three children for, disbelief in her eyes.

“So you never loved me?” she asks quietly.

He clenches his jaw and looks away.

“Fine,” she says, her voice breaking but strong. “Then I want a divorce. I’ll take my children and leave. Go be with your foolish love…”

“You won’t call her foolish, Eiryn!” he snaps, whirling toward her. Cealan, their eldest, immediately steps between them.

“She’s going to be my wife,” Dareth continues harshly. “You can leave if you want but leave the keys to my house.”

“Keys?” Serena blurts in disbelief.

I shoot her a sharp look, folding my arms, a silent warning to stay out of it. She quickly lowers her gaze.

My mother speaks then, voice cutting through the tension.

“Eiryn married you young, built your life with you, gave you children, stood by you, and this is how you repay her? You will be the one to leave, Dareth.”

“What?” my uncle sputters. “You forget you’re not even blood family. Your opinion isn’t

needed here.”

“Well, you forget I am still Queen of this kingdom,” she replies coolly. “Or would the next queen judge the matter?”

Heads turn immediately to Zephyrine. She’s been staring absently at the plates on the table, but the sudden silence makes her look up.

“Y… yeah?” she murmurs.

“She will be the next Queen,” my mother declares. “If my judgment doesn’t please you, perhaps my daughter–in–law’s will. What do you say, my queen?”

It’s a trap of sorts. Zephyrine is known for her fairness, and she knows well enough of Dareth’s cruelty. My uncle’s shoulders sag, his pride crumbling.

“Eiryn and I will handle this privately,” he mutters. “It’s a family matter.”

“It’s not,” Cealan interjects furiously. “My mother wants a divorce. Give it to her and go. We’ll manage without you.”

Realizing he’s cornered, my uncle exhales heavily.

“I’ll think on it,” he says at last. “Give me a few days. Queen, will you tell Eiryn to allow that?”

My mother glances at my aunt Eiryn, who hesitates before nodding.

“A few days,” she agrees.

With that, Dareth storms out of the dining hall, the sound of his horse galloping echoing faintly through the open doors. Even at the edge of war, he shows no fear, no sense of duty.

I sigh and turn to Zephyrine. She’s distant, lost in her thoughts. The room’s chatter fades around her. Something’s wrong.

“Lycan,” my mother calls softly.

I turn to find her watching me. “Show me to my chambers.”

“I’ll be back soon.”

She nods and rises on her toes to kiss me once more before I leave, walking beside my mother through the long, echoing halls.
