I couldn’t sleep, not a wink. All I did was step into my bedchamber and sit in bed, my sword within reach, and Blue asleep beside me.
When the first light came, I knew the day would be bloody, and it would be the final one. What I didn’t expect was for it to begin with Lycannar galloping from the distance, straight toward my Pack, right at the jaws of the enemy.
I rose the instant I felt his closeness. From the window, I watched him come. As if sensing his arrival, Varyn’s order rang out, sharp and commanding.
“Close the gate!”
The metal screeched as it clanged shut, but even that couldn’t stop Lycannar. He leapt from his horse, demon wings unfurling from his back as he soared over the wall and into the courtyard.
He landed flawlessly, the wings fading before anyone could blink, leaving only the glow of his runes burning across his chest where his shirt had torn from the temporary shift.
My brother strode out to meet him, but I wasn’t about to let that happen.
“Stay away from my sister, you demon! You do not belong here!” Varyn shouted.
That was his mistake.

In a blink, Lycannar seized him by the throat, just as I stepped into the open.
All eyes turned to us, awe and disbelief freezing the air. The moment Lycannar saw me, he released Varyn, letting him stumble back as he stood tall, his presence a living storm of power and grace.
He started toward me, but guards rushed in, shields of mirrored silver forming a circle around him. His reflection stared back from every side, but it did nothing to him.
“Enough,” I said sharply. “Let him through.”
“Zephyr, you saw his wings! He’s a demon! I knew it before…”
“Let him through,” I repeated, my tone curt, final.

Varyn froze. My anger shimmered faintly at the surface. Whatever his protest, I was still the Alpha. The guards obeyed, parting the formation, and I stepped forward, taking Lycannar’s hand. I pulled him into my bedchamber, closing the door behind us.
Blue stirred awake and quietly slipped out to give us privacy, stunned at what has happened.
I turned to Lycannar and fetched the shirt he had once left here, the same one he wore the night he saved Varyn’s life from Blackwater.
It had been washed and folded neatly. I put it on him myself, my fingers trembling as I tied the strings.
He let me, his eyes never leaving mine for even a breath. Emotion welled so thick in my chest it hurt to breathe.
He had revealed his secret, his wings, for me. Now, I wasn’t sure if even death could do more damage than that truth.
When his shirt was secure, I reached for his bracers, adjusting the straps as I spoke quietly.
“I’ll order the gate opened for you. No one will touch you. Not while I live. You’ll go back to your kingdom, Lycannar.”
“Zephyrine?” His voice was soft, so tender it broke something inside me.
I lowered my gaze, pretending to focus on the laces.
“Zephyrine?”
His fingers came under my chin, coaxing me to meet his eyes. Tears shimmered there, betraying every piece of strength I had left.
“I’m not leaving you,” he said simply, with that terrifying certainty that could bend worlds. “I can’t live without you, Zephyrine. Words won’t drive me away. I own you.”
“But you can’t have me, Lycan. Not after what happened…”
“I killed your father, and you forgave me,” he cut in, voice trembling with conviction. “Whatever happened now, we’ll face it together. I won’t leave you. I won’t reject you. And you won’t push me away. I won’t let you.”
My tears fell freely then, hot and endless, and my heart thudded painfully in my chest. I searched his eyes, and what I saw there made me want to live and die at the same time. Love. Too deep, too consuming.

“I’m dying, Lycan,” I whispered. His body went cold. “I’m dying with your pup, and I know I won’t survive it. I know it. But before that happens, I need to finish what I’ve started, so I can die in peace. You’ll promise me you’ll move on. You’ll marry. Have the pups you always wanted. Live.”
The world stopped.
He didn’t seem to hear the last words; to him, they were nonsense. The only part that reached him was that I was dying, and with his pup. His eyes went wide, and for the first time, I heard his heart hammer so hard it drowned out everything else.
“What… what pup? What death?”
