The sound of footsteps came closer, followed by a gentle tap that jolted me back to reality. I looked up to see Kai standing before me, and I nearly hissed aloud.
“You are here.”
He didn’t answer, only stared at me with concern. I could tell he was worried. Almost everyone in my family was because they knew I was slowly losing myself.
“What report do you bring?” I asked, seated in the council chamber, my gaze fixed on the scroll in his hand. With a sigh, he extended it to me,
“Alpha Nyroth, no one wants to trade with us anymore. Alpha Orod, who once begged for partnership, has completely withdrawn. It turns out the Ashmeres aided him in a war years ago, and he is heavily indebted to Ash Pack. The only reason he ran after Hue for trade was because of Zeph… I mean, Alpha Zephyrine.”
The words sank my heart further. It had only been a few days since I rejected Zephyrine, but it felt like
years.
I hated it. I hated that I had let her go, and I regretted it a thousand times. There was a time I could mindlink her as my mate, but now I couldn’t reach her at all. It was as though she had vanished from the shifter realm itself.
I let out a heavy sigh, about to speak, when more footsteps approached. A knock followed.
I turned my head toward the door just as Olivia walked in, exhaustion etched across her face.
The maids in Hue Pack had begun to quit since there was no payment. The trades we had secured were crumbling one after another. Hue Pack, which once thrived, was now drowning in debt. To make matters. worse, my mother had fallen ill after visiting Blackbridge Pack, and only Olivia was caring for her.
“Brother Nyroth,” she said as she entered. “I think Mom should see a healer. Her wolf is withering so fast. If we can get her treatment, she’ll be fine.”
At those words, I had no choice but to sigh. With what money would I pay a healer? With what means?
I swallowed hard, rose gently, and walked to the window, peering out with a heavy heart. It was as though Zeph had been my lifeline of fortune. Now that I had let her go, there was no light at the end of my tunnel.
Kaela.
That vile woman. She was the architect of all this, and yet I couldn’t even make her pay because I lacked the
power.
I sighed again and came to a conclusion. If I could not approach from the front, then I would turn to the back. I must go to Zeph and beg for forgiveness.

That night, under the dim sky, I stopped my carriage before White Pack.

When I alighted, I stood there for a brief moment, releasing a shaky breath before heading toward the Dusk household. I knocked on the door, hoping Zeph was still around to grant me audience.
I knocked again, but no response came. Impatience and worry gnawed at me.
