I arrived at night in Ash Pack, but the gates had been shut. Still, I was not deterred. I was determined to see Varyn Ashmere this night whether he liked it or not.

I would take my own pound of flesh too for what he had done. Turning my own pack into a battlefield, using the wedding as a distraction.

I was a fool. I should have known better. He is a war strategist, and there are many things he can allow… but me marrying his sister was never one of them.

Setting my jaw, I banged hard at the gates until the guard rushed to open. He looked me over first before stepping aside, letting me in.

“I will see Varyn Ashmere,” I said coldly.

Grinding my teeth, I made my way there. The same hall where he and I had spoken the other night, when he promised me heaven if I gave him Apex’s secrets.

The silence in the pack grounds was suffocating, heavy with a kind of dread. Even though the true war had not yet begun, Kai was already dead. Not by another, but by Apex’s hand, and in my eyes, both Apex and Varyn killed him.

Kai was sent off yesterday. I had watched with tears, and nothing could break me more. Nothing except the cold realization crawling into me now.

Apex had once told me Kai would die young, that his death was inevitable. He was right. Realizing that truth, that cursed prophecy, made me realize what was at stake. He truly was cursed. He must be removed from this empire before he destroys it.

I was still pacing, simmering in anger, when footsteps finally came. The door opened and he appeared. Varyn Ashmere.

For a moment, he stood framed in the doorway, eyes steady on me. Not surprised, not startled. As though he had already anticipated I would come. The way his calmness cut into me sent a chill down my spine.

“Welcome,” he said softly, walking toward his chair.

I scowled.

“You think him weak? You’ve seen him fight. You know how he swings his blades. You think your kin can hold him off?”

“The first and hardest step has been taken. Gaxib gave us the key to Apex’s weakness. His tower has fallen. He caught his reflection. And now he has shut his gates. That means he cannot defend his kingdom from attack.”
