She went completely mute. And in her eyes, I saw it. Love. A different kind of love, the one reserved for family.
After all, I am her lover, but what she felt for her brother was brotherly love, fierce and protective.
I’ve always known Zephyrine as the smartest woman alive, but even the wisest lose their senses when love blinds them.
Still, she’s my woman, and if she wants something, I’ll give it to her. Whoever she loves, I’ll
accept.
I lowered my gaze when she couldn’t respond and turned to look down at Ravana again, sighing.
I wondered what had happened to her. When my stepfather gifted me the bird, he’d said her energy was tied to Ilythra, the witch who fortified my tower.
Whenever Ilythra weakened, so did Ravana. Staring at her now, dull and unmoving, I couldn’t help but worry if the witch back in the Demon Realm was alright.
The gods grant her strength, because she’s the only one who can reopen the portal for me after the full moon.
“Lycan?” Zephyrine’s soft voice pulled me out of my thoughts. I looked up to find her panicking, and I almost smiled. She’s so fierce in battle, yet before me, she’s still humble, still afraid of my wrath.
“I’m not angry anymore,” I said quietly. “Just don’t repeat it. I love you too much to share you with anyone… even your brother.”
Her lips curved into a small smile. She stood, crossed the room, and climbed onto my lap. Cupping my cheek, she kissed me softly, lingering, before pulling back with a bright, tender
smile.
“Your mother is so beautiful. She’s elegant.”
“She has to be. She’s a queen.” The voice that cut in from the doorway belonged to Serena.
We both turned to see her and Mearez enter the chamber. They hesitated, glancing around

“What’s wrong with you, Ravana?” Mearez asked, lowering herself onto the chair Zephyrine had just vacated. “Let’s see what’s going on. Lycan, isn’t this bird connected to that witch?”
“Yeah. The last time I saw llythra, she was aging fast. Maybe it’s just old age?”
“It can’t be…” Mearez murmured, stroking Ravana’s feathers. After a few gentle passes, she sighed and withdrew her hand. “I can’t sense anything. It’s like her strength is blocked. Not natural.”
I sighed. Of course it wasn’t. Ravana wasn’t a normal raven, she talked, for gods‘ sake.
“Maybe I should take her to my chambers and see what I can do. The full moon is tomorrow. Once the portal opens, we can ask the witch directly,” Mearez suggested.
I nodded, and Serena sighed with relief.
“Thank goodness. I can’t wait to see my brother, Hades.”
At that, I smirked.
“He’ll be shocked when he learns what happened.”
“He’ll be more impressed with our next queen’s performance,” Mearez teased, winking at Zephyrine before rising. “Alright, Serena. Let’s leave the couple be. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight,” Zephyrine replied.
When their footsteps faded, I leaned back in my seat, my eyes seeking hers again. Then I gently lifted her, setting her on the table before me. She sat there quietly, her eyes watching
“You’ve spoken with your brother,” I said finally. “You plan to give up your title.”
“You have anything to say concerning Varyn?” she asked softly. Even before I could answer, I saw it in her eyes. She needed me not to hate him. She wouldn’t survive another heartbreak.
“Whatever you want, Zephyrine,” I murmured, brushing my thumb along her cheek. “If you want peace, I want it too.”
She exhaled, shoulders sagging.
“I don’t want war, Lycan. I just want to live with you and be happy. War is exhausting. Living with you… that’s better.”
