He hesitated, eyes searching mine, unsure if it was safe.

The moment I mentioned her name, Chantel’s doubt vanished. He moved quickly, unlocking each shackle until they clattered to the floor. I rubbed at my sore wrists and stepped out.

I expected to see my sisters in the dining hall, waiting as usual, but it was empty. The silence felt heavier than it should. I made my way to my father’s chamber, pushing the door open quietly.

He was asleep. My mother sat beside him, tending gently. When she noticed me, she rose and stepped into the hall, her eyes scanning me in disbelief.

“You didn’t shift?”

I swallowed, sighing.

“No. I didn’t. I’ve been feeling… different lately. I think the curse is broken.”

She stood there for a long time, just watching. Then her gaze lowered, and I sensed something

was wrong.

“You should check on your brother and sisters,” she said finally.

A warning. My heart clenched. Something terrible must have happened while I was confined. I turned to go, but her voice stopped me.

“Lycannar?”

I turned back slowly.

“You’ve punished him enough,” she said softly. “Turning into what he never expected you to become, that’s revenge enough. Maybe it’s time to bring his ashes home, where he belongs. You proved him wrong. Isn’t that enough?”

Her words froze me. She was talking about my father, urging me to bring him home.

I didn’t reply with words. I only nodded once and turned away, heading for my chamber to grab a shirt before searching for my siblings.

I expected to find Zephyrine in bed that morning, still asleep. But the bed was empty, cold, untouched.
