With each careful step I took around the pond’s edge, I felt the tremors in my legs, but I pushed them aside. My heart raced as I drew closer to him, and the moment our eyes met, my tears broke free once more. A wave of relief surged through me so fiercely that I thought my knees might give way beneath me. “I found you,” I breathed, my voice thick with emotion.

He regarded me with that fierce, snarling mask, yet there was something deeper in his gaze—fear. It was as if he believed that my proximity could bring harm to me. He lowered his head to mine, his breath warm against my skin, and I could see his massive fangs glinting in the moonlight, sending my pulse racing. But I steeled myself, determined to keep my voice steady.

“I’m alone,” I whispered, my heart pounding in my chest. “Nancy helped me track you down. No one else knows I’m here.”

A flicker of fury ignited in his golden eyes, a clear sign that he disapproved of my solitary venture into the darkness. He stepped back sharply, a growl rumbling from deep within him, “Goooo….” Then, as if retreating into the shadows of the trees, he turned away from me.

“No—don’t!” Panic surged through me, and without thinking, I fished the moonball from my pocket, hurling it at his back. It exploded in a soft burst of silver dust, enveloping him in a shimmering cloud. He froze mid-step, shock widening his eyes as the magic took hold.

I rushed to position myself in front of him, my fingers trembling as I wiped the tears from my cheeks. “You,” I murmured, placing my hand against his chest. The fur was impossibly soft, and I felt a connection that transcended words. “Don’t leave me. I have so much to say!”

His chest rumbled faintly, the only part of him that seemed to respond to my plea.

“I’m not afraid of you,” I confessed, my voice thick with emotion. “I never was. That day… I was just startled and overwhelmed. You saved our children. You protected all of us.”

I pressed my palm more firmly against him, willing him to understand the depth of my feelings.

“I love you in every form you take. You are mine, and I am yours. Please, come back to me. Come back home. Ryan and Emma need you. I need you. These past two days without you have been unbearable.” My throat tightened, and I struggled to keep my voice steady. “I can’t envision a life without you. This—this is madness. How could you think I wouldn’t want you?”

I noticed his fingers twitching slightly; the magic’s hold was waning, but I remained rooted in place. Even if he lunged at me, I wouldn’t run. He needed to see that I was unafraid. If he wanted to end my life, he could, but I was resolute—I didn’t want to live in a world without him.

As the last spark of the spell faded, he lowered his head until his snout nearly brushed my cheek. Then, with a softness I hadn’t expected, he purred. Did he truly hear me?

A warm tear slipped down my face, and he reached up, his finger gently wiping away my tears. He then lifted one massive forearm, extending it toward me, palm open, as if inviting me to climb aboard.

“You want me to climb on?” I whispered, my heart racing at the thought.

He blinked slowly, a silent affirmation.

Taking a deep breath, I carefully climbed onto his forearm. He lifted me effortlessly until I was eye-to-eye with his colossal face. “God!” I exclaimed, cupping his cheeks with my hands, my thumbs brushing over the silky fur. “You’re beautiful,” I breathed, awash in awe.
