Eyes were fixed on me, expressions shifting between surprise and disbelief.

I won’t lie—I looked absolutely stunning in this dress, and I was fully aware of the effect I was having.

Still, neither Selene nor Cassian had made an appearance at the shifting ceremony. Most likely, they were off somewhere wrapped up in their own world.

Feeling the need to escape the stifling atmosphere, I stepped outside, craving the cool night air.

I genuinely felt happy for my brother and all my close friends… so why did it sting so much that I didn’t have a mate like theirs?

That thought barely settled in my mind when an icy shiver ran down my spine. My breath hitched as I sensed a hand slide deliberately across the small of my back. A low voice whispered right into my ear, “My beautiful mate.”

Repulsed, I spun around sharply and slapped him hard across the face.

“Don’t you ever touch me again,” I growled, voice low and fierce. “Next time, I swear I’ll tear your hand off.”

How dare he claim I was his mate, as if that entitled him to invade my space?

I stared him down, unflinching. “I will never belong to you.”

That idiot—still smelling faintly of my sister’s perfume—had the nerve to beg for forgiveness, to ask me to take him back. He said if he’d known I was this irresistible, he would never have turned away “a piece of ass” like me.

Disgusted beyond words, I turned on my heel and walked away, ignoring his desperate shouts and pathetic promises to win me over again.

Before disappearing into the shadows, I flipped him the middle finger and called over my shoulder, “NEVER!” A defiant smirk played on my lips as I made my way back to the party.

Once I was among the trees again, I spotted my sister—looking every bit as reckless as ever. Her dress was scandalously revealing, leaving nothing to the imagination. Her makeup was smeared, and tear tracks stained her cheeks.
