Yves and Lindsay exchanged a puzzled look.
Lindsay answered, “We were in the cockpit the whole time. You were the one who disappeared. We only found you just before we docked.”
Her words sent a chill down Cheryl’s spine. Goosebumps erupted all over her skin, and an icy dread crept from her feet to her heart. It was summer, yet she felt profoundly cold.
She had gone back and forth to the cockpit, but they were never there. Only Jessica. Yet they claimed they had been there all along. She hadn't seen them. What had gone wrong?
Cheryl pressed on. “So, was it Jessica who told you I might be hiding in that wardrobe?”
“Technically, Jessica was the one who found you,” Lindsay clarified.
Cheryl’s face turned ashen, the blood draining from it. In that instant, it felt as if her very blood had frozen. This was all Jessica’s doing, but she had no idea how to expose her.
“So Jessica is coming back to the hotel with us? Back to Skyrim?”
Lindsay nodded. “Yes. I promised I’d help her find her brother. I can’t go back on my word.”
At that moment, Cheryl desperately wished Lindsay would break her promise. Why did she always have to be the good person?
“Okay, I guess so,” she mumbled. What was done was done. Arguing was pointless. It was better to focus on how to deal with Jessica.
Changing the subject, Cheryl asked, “By the way, did Arthur and those other men leave?”
“I don’t know. Maybe they left before us,” Lindsay replied. She wasn’t close with any of them; once ashore, everyone went their separate ways. Why would she keep track?
“Do you think something happened to Arthur?” Cheryl was worried. He had said he was going to deal with Jessica, but Jessica was clearly far more powerful than any of them. Moreover, she seemed to have the classic traits of a sociopath—and a very petty one at that. It felt like she could kill someone for simply speaking ill of her.
