The Stolen Heiress: Claimed by her Father's Ruthless Enemy. novel Chapter 52

Chapter 52: Working together.

Upon getting there, I found Victoria arranging a feast on the table, while Alexander sat at the table, his whole attention focused on the tablet in his hands.

Victoria was the first to notice me.

"Good morning, ma’am. How was your night?" She asked, her face beaming with her usual beautiful smile.

I nodded in response, nervously avoiding her gaze. I still wasn’t very comfortable with her yet, and now that I was facing her so soon after last night made my cheek burn with embarrassment. I wished that the ground would open and swallow me. How could I have been so open with someone I barely knew? What got into my head?

"Alright, I will leave you both alone now," she said, grabbing the food basket.

As she walked past me, she smiled and nodded her head at me, as if to reassure me, then walked out.

As soon as the door closed, I drew my attention back to Alexander. He was still focusing on his tablet, as if I was mere thin air.

After waiting for about two minutes, I forced myself to take a deep breath and broke the silence. "I need to talk to you..."

"I don’t have time," he bluntly replied, dropping the tablet on the table and reaching for the cutlery to start eating.

"Wait..." I said, stepping closer to him. "This is really important. I...I need your help..."

Now, he paused in the middle of cutting a piece of meat and glanced up at me without moving his head.

"Why?"

"What do you mean why?" I asked, getting frustrated.

"Why means why," he uttered. "Why do you need my help? Why would you need the help of someone you wish were dead?"

I could hear the mix of disdain, sarcasm and other emotions I couldn’t tell in his tone. However, he wasn’t wrong. I shouldn’t even be speaking to him or being in the same space as him after spewing so much hatred and anger on him last night. I understood if he didn’t want to help me... but he should also understand that it wasn’t done intentionally. I was just too emotional and needed something or someone to vent on. And he was the perfect bait.

Yes, I was wrong, but I didn’t want to apologise to him, because he never apologized for all the things he had done to me.

But... If I didn’t, he wouldn’t help me, and I wasn’t so sure where to start digging for the truth... That is why you need to apologise, Anna, just for the meantime, I thought to myself, then looked down at my hands with a sunken expression.

"I am... sorry," I said.

"Sorry for what?" He asked, as if hearing the insincerity in my tone.

"For wishing you were dead."

He didn’t respond to that, but there was a little softening in his demeanor, which told me he wasn’t very irritated at me anymore.

So, I moved to the table and sat down facing him.

"I have been thinking about what you said," I carefully began. "About my mother being poisoned."

Still, he was silent. I swallowed and continued.

"I just wanted to know if you have any idea who would have done that?"

"Why do you want to know? Didn’t you believe I killed her?" He sounded irritated, before grabbing the glass of water and drinking it.

"Yeah... but I wasn’t thinking... I just wanted someone to blame," I said. "Besides, you made me think and believe so. Your whole intention towards my family isn’t something I can just look past after hearing my mother died..."

"Right. However, my intention wasn’t to kill your family. If I wanted to, you would have been the first person to die," he said, expressionlessly.

"You never made that clear. Anyway... let’s forget about that and focus on why I am here."
