Mia's POV

I stood by the hospital bed, staring at my father's battered form with mixed emotions. After receiving the call about his "incident" at the prison, I'd came to Mount Sinai Hospital. Now, seeing Richard Williams lying there with tubes and monitors attached to him, I felt karma was real.

"You came," he said,"I wasn't sure you would."

"I almost didn't. My lawyer thought it was a bad idea."

My father's eyes flickered to where my attorney stood near the door, then back to me. The harsh hospital lighting emphasized the damage to his face—a swollen eye, split lip, and various bruises spreading across his features.

"Thank you. I know I don't deserve your concern."

"I'm not here out of concern," I clarified. "I'm here because you claimed to have information that affects my safety."

A nurse entered, checked his vitals, and adjusted his medication. I waited until she left before continuing.

"What happened to you?" I asked, gesturing to his injuries.

"Prison justice," he replied with a grimace.

I studied him, noting how Taylor and Helen were conspicuously absent from his bedside. How ironic that the family he'd chosen over us had abandoned him when he needed them.

"You said I was in danger," I prompted. "Explain."

He glanced toward the door as if checking for eavesdroppers. "Did you hear the name Diana Porter?"

So he did know about Diana Porter. "I understand that Diana Porter was your wife's distant relative. What I don't understand is what any of this has to do with me."

He started to respond, then winced in pain, shifting against the hospital pillows. "It has everything to do with you“

"You're still not giving me anything concrete," I pointed out. "Just vague warnings and mysterious connections."

His expression hardened. "I'm trying to protect you."

"From whom?" I repeated, frustration edging into my voice. "Just give me a name. One specific threat."

Instead of answering directly, he changed tactics. "Why did Dr. Pierce leave New York so suddenly?"

The question caught me off guard. "How do you know about Nate?"

"I may be in prison, but I still have resources.”

"My interactions with Nate Pierce are none of your business," I said coldly.

Nate's cryptic warnings had been bothering me for weeks. The fact that my father somehow knew about them was unsettling.

"What are you implying?" I asked.

"I'm implying that Dr. Pierce knows more than he's telling you. That he's caught between conflicting loyalties." He paused, seeming to consider his next words carefully. "Have you ever wondered why he took such an interest in your mother's case? In your family?"

"Just a moment," I told the nurse, then turned back to my father. "If I were to consider helping you, what exactly would you want me to tell Mom?"

Relief flashed across his battered features. "Tell her I have information for her, too... that she would find very interesting."

"Are you threatening my mother? Again?"

"Not threatening," he corrected smoothly. " Mia. Everyone has secrets. Everyone has something to hide."

The nurse cleared her throat pointedly. "Ms. Williams, I really must insist."

"I'm coming," I assured her, then looked back at my father. "I'll think about what you've said. But I'm not making any promises."

Outside in the hallway, Robert approached . "Are you alright? "

"I'm fine," I said automatically. "Just processing."

"Did he give you any actual information, or just more vague threats?"

I considered the question carefully. "The latter. But he implied that Nate Pierce's involved."

Could this be true? Why does Dad know about Nate?

Why do I have a feeling that I'm going to face off against Nate?
