Chapter 231 Isn’t that enough?
Mia’s POV

The hot water cascaded down my back, washing away the chaos of the day. Bits of cheese from the restaurant, playground dirt, and the general exhaustion of managing two four–year–olds for an entire afternoon swirled down the drain. I let myself stand there for an extra minute, just breathing
When I finally emerged from the bathroom in my soft cotton pajamas, the apartment was blissfully quiet. Thomas had worked his magic again.
I padded barefoot down the hallway, pecking into the twins‘ room. Alexander was sprawled across his bed like a starfish, one arm dangling off the side, mouth slightly open. Ethan had somehow managed to cocoon himself completely in his blankets, only the top of his dark hair visible.
Thomas sat in the chair between their beds, reading something on his phone with the screen dimmed to its lowest setting. He looked up as I appeared in the doorway, giving me that soft smile that never failed to make my heart skip.
“They went down easy,” he whispered, standing and following me out of the room. “Alexander tried to negotiate for ‘just one more story, but I convinced him that story could wait until tomorrow.”
We made our way to the living room, where Gas was sprawled across his favorite spot on the couch, snoring loudly enough to wake the neighbors. His golden fur was graying around his muzzle now, and I could see the subtle signs of his age in the way he’d needed help getting up onto the couch earlier.
“Look at him,” I said softly, settling beside Gas and stroking his head. “Eive years old and acting like he ran a marathon today.”
Thomas chuckled, sitting on my other side. “He did have to supervise two small humans for several hours. That’s exhausting work.”
Gas opened one eye at the sound of our voices, his tail giving a lazy thump against the cushions before he settled back into his snoring.
I leaned back into the couch cushions. Thomas shifted closer, and I found myself naturally settling against his side, his arm coming around me.
“Your hair’s still damp,” he murmured his fingers threading through the wet strands.
“I didn’t want to wake anyone with the hair dryer,” I explained.
Without a word, Thomas got up and disappeared into the bathroom, returning with a soft towel. He settled behind me on the couch, gently gathering my hair in the towel and squeezing out the excess moisture.
“You don’t have to-“I started to protest.
“Shh,” he said softly. “Let me.”
His hands were gentle as he worked, carefully separating sections of my hair and patting them dry.
I turned my head to look at him, and he was so close that I could see the flecks of gold in his brown eyes, could

count the faint lines at the corners that deepened when he smiled.
“Thank you,” I whispered, and leaned in to kiss him softly.

It was meant to be a quick kiss, just a thank you, but Thomas’s hand came up to cup my cheek, and suddenly it deepened. His lips were warm and familiar, and I guessed I liked this.
When we broke apart, I rested my forehead against his.
“This is good,” I said quietly. “This life we have. It’s really good.”
“It is,” he agreed, his thumb brushing across my cheekbone. “Sometimes I can’t believe it’s real.”
I settled back against him, pulling the throw blanket over both of us. Gas readjusted himself so his head was resting across my lap, completing our little family tableau.
I truly felt that life was good.
My life had become predictable, a real Groundhog Day, but in a good way.
I could imagine living like this for many more years, until I died.
If you had asked me five years ago if this was my future, I would have thought it was impossible.
Me? I was Kyle Branson’s wife at that time. I cooked dinner every night and wait edfor him to come home. I hoped he would look at me one more time. I looked forward to him giving me an extra kiss after we’ve had sex. Back then, I never could have imagined that my life would be like this today.
Of course, so much happened. Kyle discovered our childhood stories, and he turned to me and said the person he’s always loved is me. But I’m tired. Yet he nearly died protecting me, and then he disappeared.
Something happened inside me. It was a shattering feeling that started deep in my chest, where I had once kept a part of my heart. It’s gone now, locked away in a safe, locked and hidden box, where no one can reach it. The place where it once beat is now just a black hole, only glow faintly at the sound of that word.
Kyle Branson
Perhaps this is the ultimate ending. Thomas is good, very good, more than good. He is the perfect lover.
I gently kiss and caress Thomas, and perhaps in a few years, I will accept his proposal. Then, in a few more years, I may have new children.
