Mia’s POV

“Where did you learn that?” I asked, genuinely curious about Ethan’s observation regarding happy cows.

Ethan paused mid–chew. “Uncle Thomas told us about it when we were at the farmer’s market. He said animals that live good lives taste better because they’re not scared or sad when they die.”

“That’s very thoughtful, Uncle Thomas,” I murmured, taking another sip of my wine.

Alexander looked up from his surf and turf combination, a piece of lobster dangling from his fork. “Mama, do you think this lobster was happy too? Like, did it have lobster friends and play lobster games before it became our dinner?”

“But lobsters don’t have feelings like cows do,” Ethan said matter–of–factly. “They have tiny brains..”

“You seems to know a lot about food science, son” I observed.

“Mama,” Alexander said. “Why are we celebrating tonight?”

“Yeah,” Ethan chimed in. “You said this was a special celebration dinner, but you didn’t tell us what we’re celebrating.“I smiled. “Well, you know how Mama has been working on a very important project?“.

They both nodded.

“Today, the man who hired me to do that job gave me a lot of money.Which means Mama’s work is going very well, and we can afford this dinner.”

“How much money?” Alexander asked.

“Alexander, it’s not polite to ask about money,” Ethan scolded.

“But I want to know if it’s enough to buy a pony,” Alexander protested.

“No ponies, boys.“I said.

“Mama,” Ethan said after a few minutes of concentrated eating, “the man who’s paying you all this money… is he nice?”

“He seems nice,” I replied carefully. “Why do you ask?”

“Because,” Alexander said, pointing his fork at me for emphasis, “if someone gives you lots of money, they should be nice. Mean people shouldn’t have that much money to give away.”

“He seems like a good person. He even sent you boys those wonderful gifts, remember?”

“The art supplies and the space book!” Ethan exclaimed. “And that giant telescope we haven’t figured out how to use yet.”

“We need Uncle Thomas to help us with the telescope,” Alexander added. “He’s good at instruction manuals.”

“Actually, we saw him again yesterday.”

I froze. “You saw him where?”

“At school,” Alexander said matter–of–factly. “During learning time.”

“At school? What do you mean, at school?”

Ethan tilted his head. “Mama, you look worried.”

“We just saw him on the big screen,” Alexander explained. “Ms. Rodriguez was showing us pictures.”

“Pictures?” I tried to keep my voice level. “What kind of pictures?”

“For our lesson about different jobs people have,” Ethan said. “Ms. Rodriguez showed us pictures of doctors and teachers and police officers and…”

“And architects!” Alexander finished excitedly. “Mom is a architect.”

The tension in my shoulders relaxed. A teaching presentation about careers. That made sense.

Maxwell was probably featured as an example of a successful businessman or developer.

“Was he talking in the pictures?” I asked. “Like a video?”

“No, just pictures,” Ethan confirmed. “Mama, can I ask you something?”

“Of course, baby.”

“Why do some grown–ups have so much money that they can give lots of it away, but other grown–ups don’t have enough money for nice dinners like this?”

The question caught me off guard. “That’s… that’s a very complicated question, Ethan.”

“Is it because some people work harder than others?” Alexander asked.

“Not exactly,” I said carefully. “Some people are born into families that already have money. Some people get lucky with their jobs or their ideas. Some people work very hard but still don’t make much money because their jobs are important but don’t pay well.”

“Like teachers?” Ethan asked.

“Exactly like teachers. Ms. Rodriguez works very hard and her job is super important, but she probably doesn’t make as much money as a businessman.”

“That doesn’t seem fair,” Alexander observed.

“You’re right, it’s not always fair,” I agreed. “That’s why it’s important to be grateful when we have enough, and to help other people when we can.”

“Is that why you give money to the man with the guitar outside our building?” Ethan asked.

“That’s part of it, yes.” I said, “You boys learn a lot. Have you been having fun in class?”

“Mostly,” Alexander said, but something in his tone made me pay closer attention.

“Mostly?” I prompted.

“Well,” Ethan said slowly, “yesterday was actually really good because Madison wasn’t there.”

“Madison wasn’t there?” I tried to keep my voice neutral. “Was she sick?”

“That’s what Ms. Rodriguez said,” Alexander confirmed. “She said Madison had a tummy ache and needed to stay home.”

“But Emma’s mom picked Emma up early because Emma really did have a tummy ache, and Emma looked all green and gross,” Ethan observed. “Madison didn’t look sick when we saw her in the morning.”

“You saw her in the morning?” I asked, confused.

“Just for a little bit,” Alexander explained. “When her mom dropped her off. But then her mom talked to Ms. Rodriguez for a really long time, and then Madison left again.”

I frowned. Victoria had pulled Madison out of school after dropping her off? That was… odd.

“They went into the office,” Alexander said. “But when Madison came out, she looked like she’d been crying.”

“Has Madison been… bothering you boys lately?” I asked carefully. “Since we talked about what happened the other day?”
