Chapter 275 You suspect it too?
Mia’s POV
I handed the menu to Nate and said, “How’s Yiayia?”
Nate’s expression softened immediately. “Her Alzheimer’s is getting worse. Sometimes she forgets who I am or confuses me with my brother.”
“I’m sorry,” I said gently. “That must be so hard.”
“Some days are better than others,” Nate replied. “Last week she made me her famous lemon cookies and told me all about how proud she was of her grandson the doctor. Yesterday she asked me who I was and why I was in her kitchen.”
The twins were completely oblivious to the heavy conversation happening at our table. They were too busy coaxing Gas and the four other Nate’s dogs.
“Alexander, don’t let Einstein eat the flowers!” I called out.
“But Mama, he’s just smelling them!” Alexander protested.
“Smelling is fine. Eating is not,” I clarified.
Ethan was being more responsible, carefully organizing the dogs into what appeared to be some kind of formation. “I’m teaching them to sit in alphabetical order,” he announced proudly.
“That’s very impressive, baby,” I said, though I wasn’t entirely sure how he planned to explain alphabetical order to five dogs.
Yiayia’s small Greek place closed two years ago. She’d been too old to keep running it, and Nate had made the difficult decision to help her sell.
The outdoor seating area was perfect for our unusual dining party. Five dogs, two four–year–olds, and two adults.
I strongly recommend that all mothers who want to eat out with their children and multiple dogs should find a restaurant with a garden. It’s the only way to maintain any semblance of sanity.
Nate opened his menu, then looked up at me with that knowing expression.
“Go ahead, Mia,” he said, raising his eyebrows. “I need to know why you invited me to dinner.”
I blinked innocently. “Do I need a reason to invite you to dinner?”
Nate gave me his characteristic doctor’s gaze, his lips slightly curved in amusement. “As a psychiatrist, my professional conclusion is that when a woman becomes a mother, her actions become significantly more purposeful.”
I could only give an awkward smile. He knew me too well.
‘Alright,” I admitted, lowering my voice so the twins wouldn’t overhear. “I wanted to ask you if you’ve heard of
Victoria Whitmore and her daughter Madison.”
Nate leaned back in his chair, his expression immediately becoming more guarded. “Hmm, Victoria. Mia, I won’t say anything negative about Thomas. He’s my good friend.”
“Mama!” Alexander’s voice interrupted us. “Ethan taught Schrödinger to shake hands!”
I looked over to see my son beaming with pride while a large German Shepherd mix dutifully offered his paw to anyone who approached. 1
“That’s wonderful, sweetheart,” I called back. “Just make sure all the dogs stay away from other people’s tables.
“We will!” they chorused.
I turned back to Nate.
Nate nodded. “I remember meeting Madison briefly at a charity event last year. She was indeed noticeably smaller than average for her age group.”
“And?” I prompted.
“But Mia, this is more complicated than you might think. Victoria’s family has significant influence in this city. If you want to investigate something like this, it could be dangerous.”
I felt my frustration building. “Nate, I can’t just stand by and watch a child being abused without doing anything. I really can’t.”
“I understand that impulse,” Nate said carefully. “It speaks well of your character. But in families with that level of wealth and social connections, there are often complex dynamics at play. Sometimes we’re essentially powerless to intervene.”
“So we just do nothing?” I asked, my voice rising slightly.
