“I had a nightmare, Mama,” he said in a small voice. “It was really scary, and I called for you, but you didn’t come.”
I must have been in the shower and didn’t hear him.
“I went to wake up Ethan, but he was sleeping like a log,” Alexander continued, “He didn’t even move when I poked him. So I had to come find you myself.”
“Oh, baby,” I said, sitting on the sofa and pulling him onto my lap. “I’m so sorry I didn’t hear you. Tell me about the nightmare.”
He snuggled against my chest. “There were these bad people, and they were trying to take you away from us. And Ethan and me were calling and calling, but you couldn’t hear us.”
“That does sound scary,” I said, stroking his hair. “But dreams aren’t real, sweetheart. They’re just our brains making up stories while we sleep. I would never, ever let anyone take me away from you and Ethan.”
“Promise?” His voice was muffled against my pajama top.
“I promise with all my heart.”
His skin felt hot against mine, much warmer than it should be. I pressed my hand to his forehead, and my suspicions were confirmed.
Alexander had a fever.
“Sweetheart,” I said, “how are you feeling? Does anything hurt?”
“My head feels fuzzy,” he admitted. “And my throat is scratchy. But I’m okay, Mama. I know how my body works.”
I almost smiled despite my worry..
“That’s very mature of you,” I said seriously, “but even when we know how our bodies work, sometimes we need help from doctors. I think we should go to the hospital and let them check you out.”
Alexander’s eyes widened. “The hospital? But Mama, I don’t want shots!”
“Maybe you won’t need any shots,” I said. “But if you do, it’s because they’ll help you feel better. And I’ll be right there with you the whole time
“Can’t I just go to bed and get better tomorrow?” he asked hopefully. “Sometimes sleep fixes everything.”
“Sleep does help our bodies heal,” I agreed, “but when little boys have fevers, mamas worry. And when mamas worry, they can’t sleep. So if we go to the doctor now, then both of us can get good sleep tonight.”
Alexander considered this logic seriously. “If you can’t sleep, then you’ll be tired tomorrow, and tired mamas

make mistakes.”
“Exactly.”
“Okay,” he said with a resigned sigh. “But can we bring Mr. Elephant in case I need comfort?”
“Of course we can bring Mr. Elephant.”
I gently moved Alexander back to the sofa cushions and went to wake Ethan. I hated to disturb his sleep, but I couldn’t leave him alone in the apartment.
“Ethan, honey,” I whispered, gently shaking his shoulder. “I need you to wake up.
Ethan’s eyes opened slowly, blinking in confusion. “Mama? Is it morning?”
་་
“No, sweetheart. Alexander isn’t feeling well, so we need to take him to the doctor. I need you to come with us.”
Ethan sat up immediately, his earlier drowsiness disappearing. “Is Alexander sick? Is he going to be okay?”
“He has a fever, but the doctors will help him feel better,” I said, helping him out of bed. “Can you be a big boy and get dressed quickly?”
“Should I pack anything for Alexander?” Ethan asked, already moving toward his dresser. “Maybe his favorite book or his dinosaur?”
“Mr. Elephant is coming,” I said. “But you could grab his space book if you want. Hospital waiting rooms can be boring.”
While Ethan got dressed with impressive efficiency for a sleepy four–year–old, I went back to check on Alexander. His fever seemed to be climbing, and he was starting to look flushed and glassy–eyed.
“How are we doing, brave boy?” I asked, feeling his forehead again.
“My tummy feels funny now too,” he admitted. “Like there are butterflies in there, but not happy butterflies.”
“Nervous butterflies or sick butterflies?”
“Sick butterflies, I think.”
“Alright, sweetheart.: Let’s get you dressed and go see the doctors.”
Alexander was unusually compliant as I helped him into comfortable clothes, too tired and unwell to put up his usual resistance. Ethan appeared in the doorway, fully dressed and carrying both Mr. Elephant and Alexander’s space book.
“I’m ready, Mama,” he announced. “And I brought snacks in case we have to wait for a long time.” He held up a small bag.
“You’re such a good brother,” I said. “Alexander is lucky to have you looking out for him.”
The pediatric emergency room was busy even at this late hour. Nurses moved efficiently between rooms, and the institutional smell of disinfectant hung heavy in the air.

Alexander had grown quiet and listless during the car ride, his fever clearly making him feel miserable. I carried him while Ethan walked close beside us, still clutching the snacks and space book.
“We need to see a doctor,” I told the triage nurse. “My son has a fever and isn’t feeling well.”
She took one look at Alexander’s flushed face and glassy eyes and immediately began taking his temperature and vital signs. “How long has he had the fever?” she asked.
“I noticed it about an hour ago, but he might have been developing it earlier,” I said.
The nurse nodded efficiently. “Let’s get him checked in and seen by a doctor.”
Alexander was brave through the initial examination, though he whimpered when they had to draw blood for
tests.
“The good news is that his fever isn’t dangerously high,” Dr. Martinez, the attending pediatrician, told me after reviewing Alexander’s test results. “It appears to be a viral infection.”
I felt a wave of relief. “So he’s going to be okay?”
“He should be fine with rest and fluids,” she assured me. “We’ll give him some medication to bring down the fever, and you can take him home tonight. Just keep an eye on him over the next few days.”
“Can I stay with Alexander while you give him the medicine?” Ethan asked the doctor with his characteristic seriousness. “I want to help him be brave.”
Dr. Martinez smiled. “Of course you can stay. Brothers are often the best medicine.”
While the medical team prepared Alexander’s medication, I realized Ethan had been holding his own bladder for quite some time. “Come on, sweetheart,” I said. “Let’s find a bathroom while they get your brother’s medicine ready.”
As we walked down the corridor toward the restrooms, I felt…like there was a magnetic field drawing my attention in a specific direction.
I found myself looking toward the main hospital corridor, where the adult emergency department connected to the pediatric wing.
I saw him, I am not sure…Maxwell – Kyle – being wheeled rapidly down the corridor on a gurney, surrounded by
a team of medical personnel moving with urgent efficiency. I could see he was unconscious, with what appeared to be medical equipment monitoring his vital signs.
My feet stopped moving involuntarily, and I felt Ethan tug on my hand.
“Mama? The bathroom is this way,” he said, pointing in the opposite direction.
The medical team was moving quickly, their voices urgent as they discussed his condition some nurse said, “.. No immediate family listed…”
“Mama,” Ethan said.
“Sorry, sweetheart,” I said, shaking myself back to the present. “Let’s go.”
