Chapter 361 Birds of a Feather
Mia’s POV
The weight of disappointment settled in my
chest.
“A feeling,” I sighed.

“I understand your skepticism..”
“Sophie,” I said carefully, “I appreciate everything you’ve done. Really. But Kyle is dying.”
“The universe has a peculiar sense of timing,” Sophie interrupted. “Do you know when I first heard about you?”
I shook my head.
“Eighteen months ago, when Kyle approached me about using my resources to investigate the networks threatening your family. He showed me photographs–you, the children, your little apartment, that ridiculous dog with his tongue always hanging out.” Her smile was soft, remembering. “But what struck me wasn’t the pictures themselves. It was the way Kyle’s hands trembled when he held them.”
She removed her glasses, folding them. “This is a man who has faced down corporate raiders, hostile takeovers, death threats from business rivals. I have personally watched him negotiate billion–dollar deals without so much as a raised pulse. But photographs of his family made his hands shake.”
“That’s when I knew,” Sophie continued, “that whatever happened to Kyle Branson, the universe would not allow it to end badly. Too much love, too much unfinished business. The cosmos is many things–cruel, indifferent, sometimes absurd–but it’s not wasteful.”
“That’s not how medicine works,” I said, the words felt hollow.
“Medicine is not the only force at work in the world, ma petite.” Sophie’s voice carried the patient tone of someone explaining something obvious to a child. “I have what you might call a sensitivity to these things. Always have.”
“What kind of feeling?” I heard myself ask.
“The kind that tastes like spring rain,” Sophie said without hesitation. “Sharp and clean and full of things growing back to life. The kind that makes me want to buy ridiculous amounts of baby clothes and book church venues for weddings.”
“Sophie-”
“I know how it sounds. Believe me, if I could explain it rationally, I would. But some things exist beyond the reach of logic, and this is one of them.”

She leaned forward, her blue eyes intense despite their dreamy quality. “Kyle will recover, Mia. Not completely–his body has been through too much for that. But enough. Enough to see his children grow up, enough to watch you achieve all those architectural dreams you’ve been putting on hold, enough to grow old and gray and argue with you about whose turn it is to take out the garbage.”
The image she painted was so vivid.
“Even if you’re right,” I said, “even if somehow Kyle recovers, that doesn’t-”
“That you’ll reconcile?” Sophie’s laugh was like silver bells. “Oh, ma chère, that part isn’t a premonition. That’s just obvious.”
So confident, stylish, slightly dramatic, and utterly convinced of their own ability to improve any
situation through sheer force of will.
Sophia reminded of my Scar.
“You really remind me of a friend of mine.” I couldn’t help saying.
Before I could explain more, a familiar voice drifted in from the hallway, carrying the particular mix of confidence and chaos that could only belong to one person.
“No, I don’t need directions to the pediatric ward, I can find it myself, thank you. I’ve been navigating hospitals since before you were born, sweetheart. Trust me, I’ve got this.”
Scarlett.
“Mia Williams, you impossible woman,” Scarlett’s voice grew closer, “why don’t you tell me Alexander had a fever?”
I wanted to tell Scarlett that the children were fine, but she didn’t give me a chance to speak.
Today Scar’s ensemble was vintage–inspired but unmistakably modern: a scarlet wool coat that matched her hair, black leather boots that added three inches to her already impressive height, and a handbag that managed to look both practical and artistic.
Her green eyes swept the room, taking inventory with the speed of someone trained to assess situations quickly. Me in my rumpled clothes, the children’s expensive gifts scattered across various surfaces, and Sophie sitting in her chair like a fashion magazine had come to life.
“Well,” Scarlett said, her voice taking on that particular tone that meant she was either about to cause trouble or solve it, possibly both, “this is interesting.”
Sophie had gone very still in her chair, but not with the defensive tension. Instead, she looked like a cat who had spotted something intriguing through a window–alert, focused, and vaguely predatory in the best possible way.

“And you must be the infamous Scarlett,” Sophie said, rising gracefully from her seat. “Mia has mentioned you.”
“Has she now?” Scarlett stepped fully into the room, her attention shifting between Sophie and me with the precision of a jeweler examining precious stones. “And you are?”
“Sophie Field. The real one, not the imposter who caused so much trouble.”
“Ah,” Scarlett said, and something in her tone suggested pieces of a puzzle falling into place. “The Swiss heiress with the stolen billions and the taste for revenge. I like you already.”
She moved closer, and I watched with fascination as both women began what could only be described as a mutual assessment. It reminded me of the nature documentaries the children loved, when two exotic birds encountered each other in the wild and had to determine whether they were looking at
competition or kinship.
“Balenciaga,” Scarlett said suddenly, her eyes fixed on Sophie’s coat. “Spring collection, but customized. The buttons are different–vintage Chanel, if I’m not mistaken.”
Sophie’s smile became genuinely delighted. “Very good. And you’re wearing McQueen, but the scarf is Hermès — limited edition from the equestrian line.”
“You have excellent taste,” Scarlett said approvingly.
“As do you. That shade of red should be impossible to wear with your hair color, but somehow it’s perfect.”
“It’s all about undertones,” Scarlett explained, settling into the conversation with the enthusiasm she usually reserved for discussing her latest blog posts. “Most redheads avoid reds, but if you understand color theory-”
“The warmth versus coolness balance,” Sophie finished. “Exactly. Most people don’t understand that red isn’t just red.”
Of course these two would find each other fascinating.
