Chapter 366 I love you so

I fought against the medication’s pull, struggling toward consciousness like a swimmer fighting toward the surface of deep water.

Light filtered through my eyelids, warm and real. Sound came back gradually–the beep of monitors, the whisper of air conditioning, voices in the hallway discussing lunch menus and discharge plans. I could smell the particular mix of antiseptic and industrial coffee that lived in hospital walls.

And beneath it all, fainter but unmistakable, I caught the scent of spring rain and growing things.

My eyes opened slowly, adjusting to the soft light filtering through partially closed blinds.

Mia.

She was real. She wore jeans and a soft blue sweater, her copper hair falling in loose waves around her shoulders. Her eyes were red–rimmed. She’d been crying.

“Hey,” she said softly, setting the coffee cup aside. “You’re back.”

I tried to speak, but my throat felt like sandpaper. Mia immediately reached for a plastic cup of water on the bedside table, holding the straw to my lips with careful attention.

The water was cool and clean, washing away the cotton taste of too much medication. When I could finally speak, my voice came out rough and uncertain.

“How long?”

“Twenty hours,” Mia said, settling back into her chair but remaining close enough that I could see the gold flecks in her green eyes. “You’ve been in and out, but mostly under. The doctors said the medication needed to run its course.”

“The children?” I managed.

“They’re fine,” Mia said quickly. “They were here earlier, actually. Alexander and Ethan picked out a book for you, they thought you might like when you were feeling better. Madison painted you a get- well card Sophie gave her.”

“Sophie?”

“Sophie Field.” Mia’s mouth quirked upward slightly. “Long story. She showed up yesterday bearing gifts and completely charmed everyone in the pediatric ward. She and Scarlett have apparently decided to become best friends and revolutionize the fashion industry together.”

I absorbed this information, noting the way Mia’s voice carried warmth when she talked about this.

“You’ve cried.” I said, and immediately felt stupid for stating the obvious.

Mia smiled faintly.

“Mia,” I started, then stopped.

She waited, her green eyes patient and unguarded in a way they hadn’t been for years.

“At my funeral,” I said finally, the words coming from some deep place I hadn’t known existed, ” please don’t cry, okay?”

Mia’s eyes filled with tears that she didn’t try to hide, and her hand moved instinctively toward mine before stopping halfway.

“Kyle, you’ve been calling my name,” she said.

“I’m wishing you won’t shed any more tears,” I whispered. “You’ve cried enough because of me.”

Mia laughed through her tears, the sound broken and beautiful. “Your wish is hard to grant.”

She reached across the small space between us then, her fingers finding mine.

The tears that tracked silver paths down her cheeks. She looked like someone who’d decided to jump off a cliff and was choosing to trust that she would fly rather than fall.

“I love you,” I said. “I’ve loved you since we were seventeen years old. I loved you when I married you for all the wrong reasons, and I loved you when I was too much of a coward to admit it. I loved you when I left, and I loved you every day we were apart.‘

Mia’s tears fell faster now, but she was smiling through them.

“I love you when you’re stubborn and impossible,” I continued, momentum carrying me forward. “I love you when you’re kind to people who don’t deserve it. I love the way you make buildings that heal people, and the way you parent our children like it’s the most important job in the world. I love your terrible coffee and your midnight sketching sessions and the way you still cry at sad movies.”

“Kyle,” Mia interrupted. “Stop. Your funeral is not today,” she said, her voice steady despite the tears in her eyes,

I brought our joined hands to my lips, pressing a kiss to her knuckles.
