Chapter 375 Goodbye, Taylor
Mia
Taylor sat perfectly still in her metal chair, her eyes fixed on my face.
I didn’t speak. Just watched her.
I wanted to see through her, to glimpse the depths of her soul, but I realized that she had no soul.
Only an unsettled, twisted child remained, forever screaming her hunger.
Taylor inhabited a world that existed entirely within her own twisted mind, a place where reality bent and warped.
And the sole anchor connecting that world to reality was me.
Not a romantic anchor. Not even a familial one, despite the accident of our father’s choices that had made us stepsisters.
This was a terrifying anchor. The kind that dragged ships to the bottom of the ocean.
“You’re not going to say anything?” Taylor asked. “You just came here to stare at me? Like I’m some kind of zoo animal?”
I remained silent, studying her face. Prison had stripped away the polish she’d worn, revealing the raw desperation underneath.
She’d been watching me my entire life.
“I remerber everything about you, Mia. Every friend who came to your birthday parties,” she said eagerly, leaning forward. “Every teacher who praised your artwork. Every boy who looked at you in the hallway.”
She was smiling now, that bright, manic smile that had terrified me as a child.
I suddenly realized I was no longer afraid of that smile.
“I made lists,” she continued. “Detailed lists. Your favorite colors-sage green and dusty rose. Your comfort foods-grilled cheese with the crusts cut off, hot chocolate with those little marshmallows. The way you arranged your books by color instead of alphabetically. The songs you hummed when you thought no one was listening.”
“You catalogued me,” I said.
“I studied you,” Taylor corrected, as if this were an important distinction. “Like a scholar studies ancient texts. Because I needed to understand the fundamental question that’s haunted me my

entire life: Why can Mia be so happy?”
The question hung in the air between us, raw and desperate.
“Happy?” I repeated.
“WHY!!”Taylor interrupted, her voice rising with excitement. “No matter what I took from you, no matter how much I hurt you, you just kept… persisting. Surviving. Finding new things to love, new ways to be content. It was maddening.”
She leaned back in her chair,.
“I would lie awake at night,” she said conversationally. “I thought if I could just take enough away, hurt you badly enough, you’d finally understand what it felt like to be me.”
“Pity.” I said quietly.
Taylor’s face fell, the manic brightness dimming. “No. It wasn’t. Because even when I had everything that should have been yours, I was still me. ”
“I understand why you became what you became,” I said. “But understanding doesn’t equal forgiveness.”
Taylor’s jaw tightened. “Don’t.”
I stood up slowly. I had found my stepsister who had chosen to become a monster.
“I’ve heard every last word you had to say,” I said quietly.
Taylor’s face went white. “Wait. Where are you going?”
“Home.”
I turned toward the door, but her voice stopped me.
“Mia, wait! Don’t leave me here!”
I paused but didn’t turn around.
“I know you hate me,” Taylor said. “I know you probably wish I was dead. You hate me, right?”
I looked back at her over my shoulder. She was half-standing now, her cuffed hands pressed against the metal table, her face contorted with panic.
Taylor was crying now, tears streaming down her face.
“So what if I rot in prison until I die?” she said, her voice cracking. “Mia, my dear sister, I’ve ruined your life. You’ll never live a life without me. Even after I’m gone, every time you look in a mirror,

you’ll wonder if you see traces of me in your face. Every time your children misbehave, you’ll worry they’ve inherited my darkness. Every time Kyle looks at you, you’ll remember that he once loved me instead.”
I smiled faintly. “Maybe.”
Taylor was sobbing openly now, her carefully constructed facade completely shattered. “I HAVE RUINED YOUR LIFE!!! Don’t you dare leave!” she screamed, lunging forward as far as her restraints would allow. “Don’t you dare walk away from me!”
I stopped with my hand on the door handle.
“Tell me I ruined your life. ” she whispered, her voice broken and raw. “Tell me that every day is a struggle, that you wake up afraid, that you can’t trust anyone completely because of what I did to you.

I turned to look at her one final time. She was pressed against the table, her face streaked with tears and snot, her orange jumpsuit wrinkled and stained.
“Tell me I matter,” she whispered. “Tell me I left a mark. Tell me I changed you.”
The silence stretched between us.
“Mia, please!” she sobbed. “Tell me I’m wrong! Tell me I ruined your life! Tell me you think about me every day, that you can’t sleep at night, that you see my face in your nightmares!”
I felt no hatred for her in that moment. No disgust, no anger, no satisfaction at seeing her reduced to this. I only thought that perhaps, if my father hadn’t ignited this tragedy in the first place—if he had chosen honesty over deception, loyalty over lust, integrity over immediate gratification—things might have been different for all of us.
Maybe Taylor could have grown up knowing she was wanted. Maybe my mother could have lived a life without betrayal. Maybe I could have had a sister instead of a stalker.
But maybe was a luxury we couldn’t afford anymore.
“Goodbye, Taylor,” I said quietly.
I didn’t look back as I pressed the buzzer to summon the guard. She started screaming my name and banging her head against the wall, when her cries echoed through the small room like the sound of something dying.
The door opened, and I stepped through it.
The corridor outside seemed impossibly bright after the dim interview room.
Officer Martinez was waiting for me at the security checkpoint, her expression professionally neutral

“How did it go?” she asked quietly.
“It’s okay.” I said.
She nodded, understanding more than her words conveyed. “There’s actually one more person who’s requested to speak with you,” she said, consulting her clipboard. “Alice Jones. She’s involved
in the same case as Victoria and Taylor-she wanted to apologize.”
I found this strange. I had never heard of anyone named Alice.
