I froze mid–step, my heel hovering over the marble floor as her words sank in.

I could feel my pulse hammering under my skin. We were just talking about him a minute ago, so what was
this reaction?
“You’re shaking,” Gianna noted, her tone careful.
I was. I was really shaking. Why? What the fuck was happening?
a little lighter.
“You’re not ready to face him,” Gianna answered the unspoken question and my head got a
I turned to her slowly. “You think?”
She nodded. “With the way he left earlier, it’s only normal that you’re feeling this way. That means you feel something towards him.”
“Of course I do,” I said, my voice rising, and Gianna looked… pleased.
“Good. You don’t have to talk to him. In fact, I’ll advise you not to talk to him today.”
I frowned. “Why?”
“Who knows what might come out of your mouth? You might hurt him again.”
That kinda hurts but when she puts it like that, there was nothing I could say.
“So just play it cool today,” Gianna advised and I nodded. “Playing it cool is playing it safe.”
I nodded again, turning and walking into the room, praying that Kade wouldn’t be inside yet.
My prayer was answered for once. When I entered, there weren’t any good–looking wall of ice with an intimidating gaze. The few people there stood up when I got in and we exchanged greetings, my smile painted, my lips saying nice words even though I wasn’t even hearing myself.
I walked to the head of the table, trying not to appear too tense.
Play it cool, she’d said. Play it safe.
I could do that. I’d been doing that my entire life, so why then does it suddenly feel impossible?
The door opened and my head snapped up, but then I cursed myself for not being able to maintain my cool.
My heart almost dropped when Kade walked in.
His head was down, his eyes fixed on the paper in his hand, his eyebrows furrowed. He was without his jacket, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, exposing those powerful, tanned arms. His tie was also loosened.
He didn’t look like the man who always made sure his tie was right, nor does he look composed. Instead, he

looked like a beautiful mess.

I know work has been hell lately, but that selfish devil in me wanted to think I was the reason he was this way.
When he finally raised his head and his eyes flicked up, finding mine, the air was knocked out of my lungs, and I forgot to breathe for a second.
His face was unreadable, beautiful, harsh, his expression made from stone. And… and there were also circles under those beautiful eyes. And said eyes were everything. They were showing things he was too tired to hide. Anger. Hurt. Something that looked like longing, if I dared to believe.
I swallowed hard and forced myself to look away first.
Play it cool. Gianna’s words kept repeating over and over again in my head.
Play it cool, Belladonna.
I thought he was going to ignore me–I was getting ready to be ignored–but then…
“Belladonna,” I raised my head to him, my eyes wide.
“M–me?” I asked like the fool that I was.
I could almost hear Gianna groaning.
But he ignored me making a fool out of myself and instead said, “Good afternoon.”
My eyes were still wide as I answered, “G–good afternoon, Kade.”
There were eyes on us, gawking and trying to figure out what this tension was about. I could finally look away from him when my phone pinged.
I picked up my phone and saw it was a message from Gianna.
“Wipe that expression off your phone,” it reads. “There are eyes on you and that’s why he’s doing this. Go with the flow.”
I cleared my throat, straightening my back.
Right, how could I have forgotten? These people didn’t care what was going on in my marriage, they were just looking for faults like they always do.
How could I let my guard down like that? I really had to get my shit together.
“Let’s begin,” I said to the room, and the meeting kicked off.
I tried my hardest to give the meeting all my attention and input where it was needed. I fought the urge every time to look at Kade, and sometimes I hoped he would look at me, but I never once felt his burning gaze on
He didn’t look my way, not once.

Was it really going to end, Kade? Will you really not let me make amends? You can’t do that, Kade. Please don’t do that to me.
The meeting finally ended, and everyone stood to leave. Well, not everyone. I remained seated as I said, “Mr. Varkas, can you stay behind, please,” while hoping my voice didn’t shake.
He looked at me with that blank expression that was beginning to scare me, but he nodded.
I shouldn’t be scared because of his expression. I had seen that look in his eyes earlier. He still felt something for me, even though it was anger, but it was still better than nothing.
The room emptied, just leaving the two of us. He was still on his feet, his hands in his pockets as he looked at me with that burning gaze.
“So?” he pressed when I just stayed silent and continued to stare at him. “We’re alone, what did you want to say?”
I swallowed, getting to my feet. “I–I don’t know.”
He raised an eyebrow. “You don’t know?”
“Yeah. I just wanted to get you alone. I didn’t think too far.”
“You didn’t think far,” he echoed softly, his voice carrying an edge that felt like a blade running against my skin. “That sounds about right.”
The way he said it wasn’t cruel, not exactly. It was just tried. Like he had bled everything sharp he had for me and all that was left was exhaustion.
He shifted his weight, his hands still buried in his pockets. “So why did you want me alone, Belladonna?”
I opened my mouth, but then shut it. I could hear Gianna screaming in my head. “This isn’t playing it cool, Belladonna!”
I’m sorry, Gianna, but I can’t play cool when it comes to this man. I was helpless against him.
“I-” I cleared my throat when my voice came out too thick, and then I tried again. “I… I just… I wanted to see you, Kade.”
That drew the smallest reaction from him.
