Grace POV
The screen lights up again. Damien. Fourth call.
“You should answer,” Alice says quietly. “He won’t stop.”
I answer.
“Finally.” Damien’s voice drips with mockery. “I was starting to think you’d forgotten how to
use a phone.”
“None of your business. Just say what you want, don’t break my enjoyable time.”
“I want to know how my wife could possibly have the leisure to be out playing tourist.”
My jaw clenches. “I’m not your wife anymore.”
“The Council hasn’t ruled yet, Grace. Legally, you’re still mine.” A pause. “So tell me–where
are you? Another lake? While Darkrock actually needs a Luna who knows what she’s
doing?”
Heat floods my face. “I managed that pack just fine—”
“You managed nothing.” His voice hardens. “You sat in my office pretending to understand
finances. You smiled at pack members who tolerated you out of pity. You were a
decoration, Grace. A pretty, useless decoration.”
“Lilith’s been running things since you left. She’s actually good at it. Pack morale is up.
Border patrols are efficient. She’s everything a real Luna should be.”
My nails dig into my palm. “Lilith is your mistress-”
“Lilith is carrying my heir. That makes her more Luna than you ever were.” He sounds so
smug. “You failed. At everything. As a wife. As a Luna. Even as a wolf–oh wait, you don’t
have one of those, do you?”
“I built Darkrock’s alliances,” I force out. “I negotiated the trade agreements with White
Rock. I organized the harvest festivals that brought in revenue-”

“You showed up and looked pretty while I did the real work.”
“That’s a lie! I spent months on the northern border negotiations-‘
“Negotiations I finalized.”

“After I laid all the groundwork! The resort development? That was my proposal. The
entertainment district? My research. I brought in investors-”
“And I signed the contracts. Because I’m the Alpha. Because I have the authority. What did
you contribute? Some paperwork? Ideas anyone could have had?”
Rage burns through my chest. “Without me, you’d still be scraping for territory! I gave you
Aurorawisp. I gave you connections to the Elder Council. I gave you legitimacy when your pack barely respected you after your brother’s convenient death-”
The silence that follows is sharp as broken glass.
When Damien speaks again, his voice is ice. “Careful, Grace.”
“Or what?” The words rip out of me. “You’ve already done everything you can to break me,
and I’m still here. I’m still fighting. And you hate that, don’t you?”
“You want to talk about fighting?” His tone shifts–something darker. “Let’s talk about Lori,
then. Let’s talk about how he fought.”
My blood turns cold.
“You should have seen him. So loyal. I broke two of his ribs before he even made a sound. Dislocated his shoulder–you remember that technique?”
“Stop-”
“The silver chains burned right through his skin. The smell was incredible-”
“Shut up! Shut your fucking mouth!”
“And his face, Grace. When I asked him about you–so determined. Right up until I took the
knife-”
I’m shaking so hard I can barely hold the phone. “You’re a monster.‘

“I’m an Alpha protecting my territory.” He sounds pleased with himself. “And you know what the best part was? Watching that defiance crack. Watching him realize no one was coming
to save him. That you’d abandoned him just like you abandoned everyone else.”
“I came for him!” The words tear out of me. “I walked into your trap because I wouldn’t
leave him to die!”
“And how did that work out?” Mockery floods back. “Oh right–you got caught. You got hurt.
And Ethan had to swoop in and rescue you like the pathetic damsel you are.”
“You’re a coward,” I say. Each word precise. Controlled. “You torture people weaker than
you. You hide behind your pack. You manipulate and hurt anyone who threatens your
fragile ego. The Moon Goddess sees it all. Every. Single. Thing.”
“The Moon Goddess?” He laughs–genuine amusement. “You think the Goddess cares
about your little revenge fantasies?”
“She’ll give you
what you deserve.”
“Maybe. But I’m not worried.” Something rustles on his end. “Because while you’ve been
playing house with Ethan, I’ve been busy.”
Dread pools in my stomach. “What did you do?”
“All those files Lori collected? All those recordings? All that evidence you were counting
on?” He pauses. “Gone. Every last piece.”
The world tilts.
“I found his hiding spots. Burned the documents. Smashed the devices. Tracked down his
backups and wiped them clean.” His voice is pure satisfaction. “You have nothing, Grace.
No proof. No case.”
‘No. That can’t-‘
“Go ahead. Take me to the Council. Without evidence, it’s your word against mine. Who will
they believe? The decorated Alpha who’s led Darkrock to prosperity? Or the wolfless Luna
who ran to another Alpha?”
My throat closes.

“Oh, and Grace? Do yourself a favor and stop this divorce nonsense. No one else will want
you. I’m the only one pathetic enough to have accepted someone as worthless as you in the
first place.”
The line goes dead.
The phone slips from my fingers.
My knees give out. Gasps tear from my throat.
Arms wrap around me. Alice.
“Grace.” Niel’s voice, urgent. “What happened?”
I can’t answer.
The sobs come–ugly, wrenching. I bury my face in Alice’s shoulder and break.
All the fear I’ve pushed down. All the rage I’ve swallowed. All the pain-
I cry for Lori. For the evidence. For three years wasted. For the person I used to be before
Damien stripped it all away.
Eventually, the sobs slow. But the weight doesn’t lift.
“I need to tell Alpha Ethan,” Niel says quietly.
“No.” The word comes out hoarse. “Not yet.”
“Grace-”
“Please.” I pull back from Alice, swiping at my face. “I just–I need time to think. I’m sorry.
We should go back.”
Alice’s hand finds mine, squeezes. “Don’t apologize. Never apologize for this.”
“The outing–I ruined it-”
