Kissing Kairos felt like touching a live wire, igniting an inferno within me.
The moment his lips met mine, it was as if a match had struck; a rush of heat surged through my veins. His hands, firm yet tender, encircled my wrists with a possessiveness that sent shivers down my spine. Our bodies pressed together, the warmth radiating from him igniting every nerve ending in my body.
So, it shouldn’t have come as a shock when I suddenly felt myself engulfed in flames. Yet, the sheer intensity of it startled both me and the man who held me captive in this moment. He recoiled, as if I had scorched him, his gaze wide with disbelief as the flames danced along my chin. But just as quickly as they had ignited, they extinguished. I could see the frantic search in Kairos’s eyes, trying to decipher whether the fire that had erupted from my skin was born from fear or pure exhilaration.
Instead of voicing his concern, he leaned in and kissed me again, a bold move that sent my heart racing.
A soft moan escaped my lips, mingling with the taste of smoke and pine that lingered on his. It was intoxicating, driving me into a state of madness. Another flare of flames erupted from my fingertips, scorching the fabric of his shirt. Yet, Kairos didn’t flinch. Instead, he tore the ruined garment away, returning to claim my mouth with a fervor that left me breathless.
The sensation of his bare chest against mine was almost enough to reignite the fire for a third time. I wriggled my shirt up, desperate for our skins to meld together, a whimper of longing escaping me as desire flooded my senses.
With a sudden motion, Kairos’s hands gripped the underside of my thighs, lifting me effortlessly into the air. He spun me around, our lips never parting, and pinned me against the cold metal of the locker. The sound of my back colliding with the lockers sent a thrill through me, and I couldn’t help but groan. Seizing the moment, Kairos plunged his tongue into my mouth, a dance of passion that left me dizzy.
I nipped and sucked at him, my hands clawing at the hard muscles of his back as he kneaded the flesh of my thighs. His hips pressed against me, a hardness growing between us that felt like pure ecstasy as he ground against my core. I moaned again, our lips barely parting, the heat between us palpable. Kairos trailed kisses down the side of my neck, igniting a fire that coursed through my veins, maddening and intoxicating.
Kissing Kairos felt like a descent into hellfire.
Wait.
I was kissing Kairos.
Kairos.
“Stop,” I managed to squeak, my voice barely above a whisper. Yet, he continued to ravage my neck with his mouth, his tongue tracing the delicate curve of my collarbone, sending shockwaves through my body that made my hips buck against him involuntarily.
“Bond with him,” Mona’s voice cooed softly in the recesses of my mind. “Allow yourself to be whole.”
But it was Kairos who held me, not Maximus, not Valentin. Something felt… off.
“Stop,” I repeated, my voice stronger this time.
Kairos lifted his head, a low hum escaping his lips. His eyes were dark and hooded, filled with the same raw desire that churned in my stomach. I pushed against his shoulders, a gentle nudge that he didn’t heed.
“Stop!” I cried out, my voice echoing in the small space.

In an instant, he released me, and I landed on the bench beneath the lockers with a dull thud. A yelp escaped my lips as I hit the surface. Kairos leaned back against the row of lockers across from me, our gazes locked, both of us breathing heavily, eyes dark with unspoken emotions. I could feel the heat rising in my throat again, the desire threatening to consume me if I didn’t escape.
I had to get away from him before I did something irreversible.
With a shaky breath, I stood and bolted out of the locker room. I could faintly hear Kairos calling my name behind me, but I ignored the pull in my chest urging me to turn back. Bursting through the doors, I was met with a throng of students spilling out of the gym, their cheers and laughter blending into a chaotic symphony. I pushed past them, my heart racing, the cold winter air biting at my exposed skin, extinguishing any remaining embers of fire within me.
Kairos Moonraiser and I had kissed.
And Kairos Moonraiser was one of my destined mates. The realization struck me like a thunderbolt, a cruel twist of fate that connected him to the four candidates my mother had chosen for me last summer. A wave of anger surged through me once more. Did she know?
“Fuck,” I hissed under my breath as I sprinted forward. My destination was clear in my mind. As the imposing Admissions building loomed closer, I pushed my legs harder, fueled by a growing fury. She knew.
