Their Hidden Princess (Zora) novel Chapter 29

**Where Sleeping Rivers Dream We Follow Trails Toward Tomorrow by Evan Milesa Cade**

**Chapter 29**

The bartender slid a glass of wine across the bar, the liquid shimmering under the dim lights. I grasped it cautiously, feeling the cool stem against my palm, and turned my gaze back to the crowd. It was as if a spell had been cast; the whispers had ceased, replaced by a sea of eyes, all fixed upon me. Some faces were contorted in horror, while others wore expressions of pure disgust.

My confrontation with Kairos had clearly revealed my identity to everyone present.

I took a hefty gulp of the wine, the slightly acidic taste burning as it trickled down my throat. In my life before this, I had never been one to indulge in alcohol. The idea of losing myself in a haze had never held any allure for me. Yet, here I was, feeling the weight of their stares despite being dressed to the nines. I craved that escape, that sweet oblivion.

Another sip. Gradually, the intensity of their gazes began to drift away, allowing me to survey the room. My attention was drawn to a small group in the far right corner, their animated chatter contrasting sharply with the silence that had enveloped me. A striking gold and white dress caught my eye, and as I followed the fabric upward, I recognized Loren.

She was engaged in conversation with a woman who towered over her, possessing the same alabaster skin but with cascading, dark brown hair that flowed elegantly in perfect waves. The deep blue of her dress complemented her striking golden eyes, and I couldn’t help but notice how closely her features mirrored Loren’s.

That must be her sister, I mused.

“Now would be a good time to introduce yourself,” my inner voice chimed in, urging me forward. It could be advantageous to have a few allies tonight.

Surprisingly, I found myself in agreement with that voice. I made my way around the perimeter of the room, careful to avoid any further confrontations. As I approached Loren from behind, I placed my hand gently on her shoulder. She spun around, surprise lighting up her face before it transformed into a radiant smile. Without hesitation, she enveloped me in a warm hug.

“Zora!” she exclaimed, her excitement palpable. “You made it! Oh Gods, you look absolutely stunning!”

I chuckled lightly, warmth flooding my cheeks. “Thanks! They really pulled out all the stops for me tonight.”

Loren’s smile widened as she turned to the woman beside her, drawing her forward. “This is my sister, Alessia,” she introduced. “She’s the next High Alpha of Moonbeam.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” I said, extending my hand. “I’m Zora Smith.”

Alessia regarded me with a curious expression, her eyebrow arching slightly. “So, you’re the infamous Zora? I’ve heard quite a bit about you. Seems like Kairos has taken quite an interest.”

“Unfortunately, that’s true,” I replied, rubbing my arm nervously.

Alessia took a sip of her champagne, her demeanor relaxed. “So, are you hoping to find a mate tonight?” she inquired, her tone shifting to something lighter.

Relieved at the change of subject, I sighed and fiddled with my wine glass. “Maybe? I’m really new to all of this, so I’m just trying to follow my instincts.”

“That’s the best way to approach it!” Loren chimed in enthusiastically.

“Absolutely,” Alessia agreed, her eyes sparkling. “That’s how I found my mate. Speaking of which, here he comes now.”

I turned my head, and my heart plummeted. Petyr was striding over from the bar, his trademark smirk firmly in place until he caught sight of me. The smile faltered, and he wrapped an arm around Alessia’s waist, planting a kiss on her cheek. His expression shifted to one of neutrality, but I could sense the tension as he took in Loren and me.

“Mini Moonbeam,” he drawled, his gaze fixed on Loren before shifting to me. He nodded curtly. “Wolfless.”

“Petyr, be nice,” Alessia admonished lightly, her tone lacking any real threat. Disgust twisted my lips, and I returned his nod with a tight smile. Loren’s hand crept to my elbow, a silent gesture of support.

“Did anyone explain the steps of the Mateball to you?” she asked gently. I shook my head, feeling a wave of apprehension wash over me. Alessia took another sip of her champagne, then turned to me with a reassuring smile.
