Chapter 191
That afternoon, as Jessica drifted back to consciousness, she found that Brian was no longer in the hospital room.
“Jessi, you’re awake! Are you feeling any better? Are you hungry? I made some soup. Would you like some?”
Stella, who had been keeping vigil by the bedside, immediately noticed and quickly helped her sit up.
“Mom… what happened to me?” Jessica murmured, still in a daze.
“You fainted outside the courthouse and gave us such a fright. Brian was super worried. He scooped you up and rushed you to the hospital, running several red lights along the way.”
Stella had to admit she was quite pleased with Brian this time. At the very least, it showed he genuinely cared about her daughter’s well–being.
“Did he bring me to the hospital?” Jessica asked, her voice still weak.
As she spoke, her eyes instinctively swept across the small room, but there was no sign of Brian anywhere.
“Don’t look around for him. Brian’s already gone. He was worried you’d be upset if you saw him when you woke up, and he specifically told me not to bring him up in front of you…”
Stella abruptly cut herself off, realizing she’d broken her promise.
“Whether you mention him or not makes no difference. Does he really think I’d be so moved by this one thing that I’d forgive him? Dream on,” Jessica
said bluntly, her face icy cold.
She must have still been groggy from sleep. How could she have subconsciously hoped to see Brian?
“All right, all right. Let’s not talk about him. Here, have some soup.”
Noticing Jessica’s mood sour again, Stella quickly tried to change the subject.
Jessica took a sip of the chicken soup Stella offered. Maybe because she was hungry, she found it surprisingly delicious.
With a faint smile, she praised, “It’s so good, Mom! Your cooking just keeps getting better.”
Stella’s smile stiffened slightly. Afraid Jessica would notice, she quickly lowered her head and scooped up another spoonful of soup, bringing it to her
lips.
“Eat it all if you like it. I’ll make you more later.”
“Okay.”
Jessica didn’t refuse. Under Stella’s attentive care, she finished the entire bowl of soup. After chatting with Stella for a while, drowsiness overtook her
again.
Stella quickly helped her lie down and gently tucked her in.
Only after making sure she was sound asleep did Stella tiptoe out of the hospital room.
Leaning against the wall outside the ward, Brian immediately fixed his hopeful gaze on the thermos in Stella’s hands as she emerged.
Stella spoke up without waiting to be asked, “She finished it all, Brian. You’re really a great cook.”
Brian let out a sigh of relief and said sincerely, “That’s great. I’ll bring another serving later. If Jessi needs anything else, please let me know right away.
With that, he nodded toward Stella, his gratitude and respect clear in his every move.

Chapter 191
He was so humble and sincere that, no matter how angry Stella was, she found her anger melting away.
“You two…”
Stella shook her head, thinking of all the messy history between them.
Brian lowered his gaze, silent.
After school, Jacob came home to find his father absent. He hesitated for a moment, then grabbed his newly bought snacks and headed to Grant Manor, only to learn from his grandfather that his mother had been hospitalized.
“Grandpa, what’s wrong with Mom? Is she okay? Which hospital is she in? Please take me to see her!”
Jacob was desperately worried. He grabbed Dereck’s hand and tugged insistently, stubbornly demanding to see Jessica.
“It’s nothing serious, just exhaustion and a bit of anemia; she fainted from low blood sugar. She’s awake now, but it’s getting late. I will take you to see her tomorrow, okay?”
Dereck still had a soft spot for his only grandson.
Jacob couldn’t wait. All he wanted was to see his mom right away.
“Listen, Jake. It’s already so late. Your mom is probably already asleep. Can you bear to disturb her rest?”
Dereck gently patted his head as he reasoned with him.
Jacob bit his lip, knowing Dereck was right. He stopped insisting, but still turned to Dereck to confirm.
“Promise, Grandpa? We’ll go see Mom as soon as we wake up tomorrow.”
“Alright,” Dereck said after a pause.
“Grandpa, can I stay here tonight? I promise to be good and won’t cause any trouble. I can even skip dinner,” he whispered softly.
After speaking, Jacob peered up anxiously at Dereck, eyes full of worry, afraid his grandfather would refuse.
Dereck frowned slightly. It wasn’t that he minded, but-
“Does your father know you’re staying over tonight?” he asked gently.
“I’ll call Dad right now! He’ll definitely say yes,” Jacob declared eagerly.
As he spoke, he tapped his smartwatch and dialed Brian’s number.
As expected, Brian had no objection at all to him staying at Grant Manor, but he was less than enthusiastic about his visiting Jessica.
“Your mom needs to rest now. You…”
“I won’t disturb her, Dad! Please just let me see her, Grandpa already promised to take me!”
Before Brian could finish, Jacob jumped in, eagerly promising.
Hearing that Dereck had already agreed, and not wanting to get into another argument with his father–in–law, Brian finally gave in.
Brian said, “Alright, you can come. But you must listen to your mother and not upset her. Understand?”
“Yes! Yes!” Jacob replied eagerly.
Jacob nodded eagerly. Then, he started questioning non stop.

Chapter 191
“Dad, are you at the hospital now? Is Mom with you? Is she asleep? How’s Mom doing? And is her baby okay too?” he rattled off.
His barrage of questions quickly got on Brian’s nerves. He answered selectively, then hung up.
Rounding the corner, he headed toward the nearby hospital room.

Stella had just packed up and left, saying before she went that Jessi was already sound asleep. “If I just peek in for a second, it won’t disturb her, right? Just one look. That’s all,” Brian tried to convince himself,
He would just take one look and leave.
Silently, he gripped the doorknob and turned it gently.
Inside the hospital room, Jessica listened to the approaching footsteps, her eyelashes fluttering faintly.
She wasn’t stupid. Maybe the first bowl of soup could have been a coincidence, but the dinner Stella brought later tasted exactly the same as what Brian used to prepare for her.
Moreover, according to Stella, after she fainted, Brian had run multiple red lights to rush her to the hospital–clear proof of his concern.
A man like him wouldn’t just leave before she woke up.
Jessica had every reason to believe that Brian had never actually left, but had been waiting outside her room the whole time.
But why?
She realized she couldn’t see him through anymore.
Even Stella was helping Brian keep things from her. That had never happened before.
An intensely palpable gaze rested upon her as a warm palm suddenly drew near, gently tucking in the edges of her blanket.
Afterwards, the visitor made no further movement, but Jessica could keenly sense his gaze fixed upon her, never once wavering.
Suddenly, there was a rustle of fabric as someone slowly leaned over.
Beneath the covers, Jessica’s hand clenched into a tight fist.
When that familiar breath brushed against her eyelids, she couldn’t hold back any longer. Her eyes snapped open as she stared at the intruder,
“What are you doing?” Jessica demanded, her eyes wide open as she stared at Brian.
